that's a pretty air tight theory, I still teckon the one I posted on Xbox.com a couple of months ago (shortly after the whole "will halo 3 be called forerunner" thing) holds a lot of water. It is quite similar:
P.S. I know parts of this are now horribly disproven, but i couldn't be arsed changing them.

OK, OK.
So it's mere speculation, but I was trawling the internet today looking for something (anything) about Halo 3 - I am a bit sad and do this nearly every day. Anyway, I came across the post by Duo Maxwell allegedly a transcript from the upcoming issue of Game Informer, which claims that the next Halo game will be called Forerunner/Halo: Forerunner or similar and could be a prequel to Halo:CE and Halo 2. Personally some of the info in the post sounded dubious, but it did get me thinking.
Those of you that have played the Halo games and read all the novels will know that the Forerunner were an advanced race who vanished long before the war detailed in the story, leaving behind a load their technology, including the 7 Halos (one of which was destroyed at the end of Halo: Combat Evolved). We also know that the other 6 are scattered throughout the universe so that in the event of a Flood outbreak the universe can be cleansed. This is all very well and good, but how come 343 Guilty Spark recognises the Master Chief (although he's never met him) in the first game and refers to him (and later in Halo 2, Miranda Keys) as a "reclaimer", put simply the humans are the Forerunners. Also:
Cortana keeps saying that the forerunner technology looks familiar.
Master Chief always seems to know how to operate forerunner consoles.
Only the humans can use the Index (when you play as the Arbiter on the last level of Halo 2 you can't get at it, but Miranda Keys picks it up straight away).
After the retrieval of the Index in Halo:CE, when confronted about the true function of Halo, 343 Guilty Spark comments: "But you already know that...I mean...how couldn't you" - "Last time you asked me, if it were my choice, would I do it? Having considerable time to ponder your question, my answer has not changed." This not only shows that the Forerunner destroyed themselves with the Halo weapons, but that the Master Chief, as a human, is mistaken for one of the builders of Halo.
A lot of this information is already scattered around the net, but it seems to fit quite well with the speculation about Halo 3 being called Forerunner. What if - let's call it Halo 3 for simplicity's sake - was not a prequel, but the completion of a circle (or Halo if you will). Right, this is the important bit:
The "Ark" described at the end of Halo 2 is Earth, which explains why the humans were safe from any previous activations of the Halos (not that we know for certain that there have been any).
The deeply religious Covenant, who worship the Forerunners and dispise the humans are going to attempt to destroy Earth in Halo 3. This will not happen, because at some point in the (near?) future the humans will realise that Earth is the key to controlling the Halos and will activate them. This will destroy all life apart from that on Earth, and will in the process destroy the "forerunner" technology on the planet and probably all the Halos too.
The humans will have to recreate the technology from Cortana's memory banks which include info on the halos and other forerunner tech, this will then be sent back in time somehow and the whole process will start again.
This ensures that the humans will always survive and they will always have the technology to defeat the Covenant and the Flood right under there noses.
The Master Chief will be the key to everything - somehow.
Cortana will "expire" in the process of the removal of the Forerunner information.
There will be no more Halo games, unless they are sub plots and unseen missions - very unlikely to happen.
The film WILL most likely be an interpretation of Halo: The Fall Of Reach, but will probably cover the plot of Halo: The Flood/CE aswell. If the film is a success there may be two, or even three more films covering the events of Halo: First Strike, Halo 2 and Halo: 3/Forerunner.
This may well all be bollocks, but I'd be surprised.
Comments and suggestions please, I know there are problems with this theory and things that don't quite add up, but that's were I need your help. Slag me off if you like, I'm a big boy, I can take it.
