First off, happy endings are overrated. What better way to end the greatest adventure than with the biggest bang since...uh...the big bang. An ending like that could be tragic but awe inspiring.
Second, what about the flood? The forerunners weren't messing around. They built that stuff for a reason. To quote the special ops commander, "the parasite is not to be trifled with." We could find out just how evil the flood are and then the final solution will be obvious.
Finally, blaze of glory people! Come on!
While I'll agree happy ending happen far too often to be realistic, consider this: We just spent the last two Halo games working our asses off to save Earth, and now we just activate Halo??? Seriously, knowing that the "good guy always wins", we will save Earth and find some other way to deal with the Flood. Shotguns come in handy.....
