Moved to the Library, as it's more of a Halo 1 story question really. Though the upcoming Halo Graphic Novel is going to have a story on how Sgt. Johnson escaped.

Sgt. Johnson. He survived because he is god.

Damn, I haven't changed this in like 4 years...

That was simply an enjoyable part of beating Legendary, a simple: "Congratulations from all of the hardworking people at Bungie".

Carrots.

This has been answered about... 50 times [rounded off], but lazyness to look up threads is a good thing (Sarcasm), so I'l tell you.
Read the Halo books.

Sgt. Johnson ("Thats black guy"'s name) was atacked by the flood, but he found a crap load of plasma grenades (The glowy blue-ey stuff) and used them all agaisn't the flood, now, he used too much, and it got into his nervous system, so if the flood tried to get in there, they would die from the plasma, so he survived.
He escaped the Forerunner structure, and he was flown off of Halo, safe and sound.

There's going to be a graphic novel depicting Johnson's escape? Well. Then I guess that defeats the purpose of Halo: The First Strike. Unless it's about the First Strike, which I doubt.

Sgt. Johnson had a disease that when the Flood infected him...it negated it. Then he fought his way off with an ONI Ghost I believe, a pilot, and an ODST. All of them end up eventually perishing anyways(except Johnson of course).

It probably had sumthing to do with the super powers he got from the flood when they failed to infect him because of his affected nervous system

Ok guys, it’s just a broadened interpretation of quantum linear superposition.
Observe the apparent relative state of Sergeant Johnson in one place (Halo in its time of destruction) while, in actuality he coexisted in the objective vector state, (somewhere near Earth, or some sort of spacecraft to ensure his escape) you follow? Remember, time is not an immutable forward progression, but a factor in a space-time model of relativistic causality determinism. That’s how he escaped. He simply went *poof* to a safer location. Hopefully you understood me.
