Subject: Something big we missed in CEA's first Terminal...

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

I've not seen anyone else pick up on this ever since the first Terminal was released (before the game even came out) and it was so easy to miss.

I was playing CEA and decided to rewatch the first Terminal, in it Spark said something I didn't quite understand, so I exited and put on subtitles and realised that he'd said:
"This ring contains significant dangers, and even with your assumed legacy, I must verify the presence and pitch of your gei before allowing full access." ~ 343 Guilty Spark

Notice that Spark says that after he identifies the Autumn as being filled with humans, this single line confirms that humanity do have a geas imposed on them. Which therefore gives weight to the idea that the Forerunners have been indirectly nurturing humanity.

For those who do not know, geas are like commands passed through the subconscious the Forerunners imposed on a species. It can be passed on to their children and through the family line until the geas is fulfilled.

Me too, I play with subtitles for all games because sometimes I don't hear words properly

But yeah, "presence and pitch" is interesting.....

Also, could the geas have directed humanity to Reach during their first forays into interstellar travel? I am thinking in line with your "Reach is artificially augmented for humanity" thread.

"I may not be perfect, but always been true."

I don't think the geas directed humanity to Reach, I mean, it's not really that important if you think about it. Sure, it's humanity's military stronghold, but apart from that there's nothing special about it, save the Forerunner artifact, but there's Forerunner artifacts in several other planets. So I say, coincidence.

Reach has a slipspace crystal, considered the norm for Forerunner ships but would be a massive scientific discovery for humanity. Why would the Forerunners would lock it away? The planet has clearly been augmented to become stable, it's only a billion years old (very young for a planet, compare it to Earth), along with a massive data centre (which would be a very likely place to house information due to the loss of the Domain in a place with a name that relates to the meaning of "a coming war"). All this considered makes Reach a treasure trove of convenient things.

A crystal for humanity to advance their technology and a data centre likely containing information about the Forerunners ("without that record, whould future civilisations know anything about us or only of our weapons?"). All seems a bit too convenient to be a coincidence.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

Hm, interesting indeed. I wonder if that's why John somehow knew which buttons to press on forerunner tech. They mention in the books that they looked familiar to him. I wonder if that's the result of geas.

I did notice this around the time it was first released, which did intrigue.

Don't -blam!- with Kerser!

I had made a theory about this around a month ago. You just confirmed it.

I just saw a green monkey nut shot a small tan lizard(?) in a gunny sack.

Interesting. I always wonder what would happen if 343GS got through to the Autumn. Keyes could've had them eliminate the Covenant pursuing them, and the humams would've had a huge leg up in the war

This may have already been discussed, but I just got CEA so I'm probably behind. Anyway, in one of the terminals it talked about someone's fury being unchecked by the librarian and that it would be worse than the flood. Who were they talking about?

Cortana asks how he knew which button to push. The Chief replied that he didn't actually know.

At first, I figured that he just decided to push random buttons until he got what he wanted(which is what I would do, for science). I assumed he just got lucky and hit the right button on the first try. Remember, the Chief is by far the luckiest Spartan.

Now that I've read Cryptum, that changes things. If it is the geas, then that means the writers at Bungie had some idea about the nature of the Forerunner-Human relationship since the very beginning. That's a lot to wrap your head around.

The Forerunner Promethean, Didact. Husband of the Librarian, and supreme commander of the Forerunner military.

No, In the book the Flood, MC says that his mind tugged him to press a symbol to activate the light bridge and Cortana asks him how he knew which one to press, to which John exclaims that he didn't.

I've believed humanity's under a gei since we first heard of the concept in Cryptum; something that prevalent in the novel wouldn't just be in there for the Forerunner trilogy alone.

I wouldn't be surprised if a Lifeshaper's still alive, myself. Maybe even the Librarian herself.

We have visual confirmation of the Librarian's death, I don't think we can pull a 'Truth is alive' theory out of this one, Wolvers. ;)

So, back when The Flood was published, I wonder what the idea was behind John instinctively knowing what button to press; when the concept of having a 'geas' seemingly hadn't been formed...

But she could have passed down her knowledge to another before her death like Didact to Bornsteller. Although very unlikely maybe she had an apprentice or left records and now the other in her class have studied and surpassed her in their knowledge, or they were pulled back and are just getting back to that level.

I don't think we can go on saying, "oh but this character MIGHT have survived by doing this". The Librarian had fully accepted she was going to die, she even begged her husband to fire the Halos. She is the one who would have engineered this geas for humanity, and each of the Monitors have a fragment of her in their mind, she indirectly lives on through this but the individual is dead.

This is one of the few things that actually gets me mad because it is a complete misunderstanding. We don't know anything about Lifeworker mutations to start with, not to mention what happened to bornstellar isn't something that happens often, if ever before. When somebody is about to die they won't say "Yea, bring me a young first form so i can transplant myself into him/her".
