The Halo novels describe the life expectancy of AI. It isn't very long at all. Cortana has been around for quite a long time, she was made long before she was implanted into John. Could her insanity in the trailer be a sign that Cortana is dying? This adds a lot of depth to the Halo storyline...

I think the lifespan set in the books for "Dumb" AI (Non-military high up AI) Is about 7 years. And Durga from the Ilovebees series explains that AI die out before they can go rampant. And since Cortana is as high up as they come, She's prone to something like rampancy. So I believe she is, In a way, Dying.

But the fact that all the exposure to halo's mainframe, And not to mention gravemind, She's got alot of factors working.

(This is my first post, Guys. Be gentle. haha.)

It is possible that at some point Cortana has aquired a program derived from the forerunners that can extend her lifespan indefinetly. The moniters are a form of forerunner AI and they have been alive for billions of years.

interesting idea. it makes sense to, unlike most of the other theories in this forum.

and i thought that the smart AIs could live 7 years, and the 'dumb' ones a little longer. im not sure tho...

There once was a man who didn't believe his rake was in a field, until he stepped on it and it smacked him in the face. Just because you don't believe something doesn't mean its not true.

As far as i can remember, the dumb AI's can last as long as they have a power source because they were programmed for a specific task and they don't go rampant. Smart AI's go rampant because they're programmed to learn and eventually they learn so much that their thinking takes up so much of their processing power that they "forget" to function normally. They don't definetely die after 7 years, thats just the average of how long it takes for smart AI's to accumulate that much knowledge, it could be more time or it could be less time. Thats my two cents

If AI's malfunction due to extra information, being implanted to the first Halo's mainframe would have killed Cortana right then, so it's unlikely she's dieing from that, however with the Gravemind's apparent interference, it's possible she is.

Thanks.
With Cortana's wealth of knowledge Id'e say her time is almost up if she hasnt found a way to extend it. Whay do you think of the storyboard picture, the one with her sreaming. It is possible Gravemind is torturing her or she is so frustrated she cant communicate with John that she is just screaming as some people do when they give up on something important.

well, I think First Strike said that being inside Halos computer filled her with lots of information and significantly shortened her lifespan, and during First strike, she was going a little slower than usual, but she obviously had enough capacity to hold it all and still have some extra space

Yeah your right, just think of all that info. During her stay on Cairo Station she would have dumped a significant part of it (only the parts she want to, remember, she may want to hide things from the humans for safety purposes). I have read the books and I vaugly remember something about this. Is she able to dump the information permanantly and therefore increase her lifespan or, even though the information is gone, her lifespan is still the same as it was with the info on board.
