In Halo: CE, 343GS talks to the Chief about activating the rings. He says:
"Last time, you asked me, if it was my choice, would I do it? Having considerable time to ponder your query, my answer has not changed. There is no choice. We must activate the ring."
This implies that he spoke with MC the first time the Halos were activated -- 10,000 years ago.
Also, in the new trailer, Cortana says: "I know you. Your past. Your future." She obviously knows his past because she worked with him for so long. But the future?
This can be explained by having the Chief go back in time, to just before the first activation of the Halos. If this happened, he would most likely encounter the Flood at some point. This memory would be preserved in the Flood's communal memory/intelligence (Gravemind), and would subsequently be passed on to Cortana when he absorbs/takes over/allies with her, which is suggested in the trailer.
If all this happened, then Cortana would "remember" the Chief being around on Halo thousands of years in the past, and would therefore know his ultimate fate -- his future -- because it already happened.
Finally, we know that time travel is possible in the Halo universe because one of the Halo books deals with time-warping crystals discovered by the Prophets.
Sound plausible?
