Subject: Coming back to Reach (Long Thread)

I have been an avid player of Reach for some time now, having attained rank and knowledge, etc. However, I recently bought another FPS and kinda stopped play it for about 2 months, and didn't really spare a thought for Reach.

However, I have recently come back to Reach, and have started playing both equally. For some reason, and this is something that I have talked to my mates bout and they have been unable to shed any conclusive light on this; they always seem to come back to this game, or rather; this series of games.

The same happened with my mates who play Reach, and bought Black Ops, and now MW3. They came back to Reach. One of my mates suggested that Reach simple does a lot of things right, ad this I can certainly agree with. It has a simple and intuitive interface and lobby system, and is amazing fun to play. Also, you get firefight and custom games that can be played over live for fun or competitively. In essence, it does what you want. But it isn't done there; It also allows you the chance to create maps, game types, screen shots and videos and then to share them through the Reach interface with your mates and the wider audience, and also through the community forums and pages, such as Forge Hub and, of course, these forums.

But that doesn't quite cover it. We're still not there.

Reach has something else about it, yes, it has that feeling of fun and potential silliness that comes from a game that includes the player so much in the multi player design aspect of it, but something there is something else that just makes it fun. Everyone has those games or moments when the game makes them mad, but it has never stopped me, or anyone I know, from leaving it and never coming back. We have never thought, "You know what? This game sucks. Nothing ever goes my way," because it has that indefinable, unmeasurable quality that leads to its huge re-playability. Frequently I have seen people on these forums complaining that the campaign lacked the this or that, whether it was story, continuity from the previous games or books, or just everything in general. Yet we still play the game. It has never stopped us, no has any game made me leave completely Reach in favor of it.

So, this is what I think, it is far from an absolute truth, and I want to know what you think. Do you keep coming back to Reach? And, just as importantly, why? Because I highly doubt that I have given all the reasons. What makes Reach feel so special?

Thank you for your time,

Lizard

the gun pointed at the head of the universe

a very minor misuse of a semicolon at one point

uhm, anyway, I play Reach because when it's not too laggy, it's fun to play. the weapons have a nice visceral kick to them. a lot of Reach reminds me of CE, due to the size and feel of the environments, and the lack of duel wielding plus a scoped pistol ect.

Hey, uh, if you like vs threads, then check out this little group right here, if you have the time. It's pretty fun, just hop right in.

I do not; I'm too busy with Prototype, Dead Space 2, and Left 4 Dead/2.

I have to say, you do have excellent grammar...except you didn't to capitalize the first letters of every sentence. :c

I wish I could post the Picard Facepalm, but I can't be bothered to go look for it. If somebody could do that for me, that would be appreciated.

Ooh, I love those people, the ones who decide to throw everything and the kitchen sink at you, as if an M16 does anything to a T-90. Oh, MLG player with noobtube instead? Congrats! You blew off one of my ablative plates!

Gun, meet Bad Guy.
Bad Guy, this is Gun.

Being old doesn't make them boring.

Sorry about the semi colon :\ I have never fully understood when they are supposed to be used. On the topic of being reminded of the Halo games of old, one of my mates pointed out to me that Halo 3 and Reach and very different, in the campaign environments. In Halo 3 you play in huge structures or in massive battles (The scarab battle as case and point) and the game felt big. Whether it was through the use of huge structures or amazing background, such as the waterfall in the cartographer area. This is something that I felt Reach was lacking. Yes, you had wide open areas, but they didn't feel special, and more importantly, although this was due to the nature of the environment (being a Human controlled world), it didn't feel Alien enough. Again, take Halo 3. You fought with massive structures, and it was brilliantly designed. But most of all it had something unique and special, I mean hell, the Forward Unto Dawn landed in front of you! That just doesn't happen in Reach, which is a pity, because I feel it would have given it more of that, 'something special' that other Halo games had.

Left 4 Dead 2 is amazing and I still occasionally play that game.

OT: I totally agree with you, when playing halo, I feel I have the freedom to do anything, whereas Call of Duty, or any other game out there, there's barely anything you can do.

HaloCE is almost 10 1/4 years old now, is it still played? Yep. BF/BF2 are almost 3/6 years old now, do people play them? Many do!

Welcome back.

Thanks :P

On the note of comparing to Cod or BF: I guess the main difference is that Halo is far more a sandbox game than those series of games. Also, Halo has vehicles, which COD does not have (in multi player) and whilst BF does have them, they are dealt with in a different way. BF's class system means that vehicles are only really ever taken down by other vehicles or the Engineer class (occasionally support class) which means that yo cannot go from anti personnel, eg a sniper, to anti tank. Halo deals with it differently by having the weapons needed to take them down placed on the map, a feature which neither of the other two games have, a point that should be emphasized as it is a fundamental difference. It adds a new depth to game play as, in part, you fight for the weapons as well, which, as should be noted, do not have personalization, meaning that no-one has an advantage based on what weapon they use. By which I mean, if you have a sniper, and they have a sniper, neither of you has the better gun; it becomes a matter of skill. This, is a large difference with COD, as both use a monetary system, but with different rewards. COD uses the money to upgrade guns, as well as buying better emblems. Halo uses the money (In Reach) to buy armour, so that you can work to make your spartan look exactly how you want him too. This couples nicely with the community based game that is Halo, whilst also meaning that low levels can easily get into the game, and a low level with skill stands a good chance against a high level, as this skill similarity is not offset by the higher level having access to better weapons and upgrades, which I feel is a better system.

I agree with you, I haven't played Halo in awhile. I know what you mean by the feeling that Halo gives off that games like mw3 and battlefield 3 just don't give. I haven't felt that feeling of a good BTB game, or a close ZB game. Squad Slayer, going head to head working strategies. Sure I do that in CoD, but it just doesn't feel the same. I would go back, but for a few reasons. Mw3 I just got and it's still fun. My Halo disc is scratched. I also kinda suck at zB. If I were better at Halo, I would go back to it instantly.
