Ai crate climbing I think was a good addition. Sure you can't use them for flinching, but it adds a sense of realism to the Halo storyline. Just having them mindlessly running into crates just makes me think it's an old inperfect game and I wouldn't take the story too seriously if they had AI making obvious stupid mistakes like that3 words.
Choo choo climb.
And fyi, if the crate blockade is positioned correctly, then they will still run mindlessly when scripting calls them. Crate climbing is a pointless addition.

On CS, first hangar, second hangar, and bomb room, on LASO,
I've seen Elites delay their death or make it too easy to kill them by crate climbing and it gets annoying. I want the damn sword wielding Zealot to get his ass over here so I can assassinate him, not climb up the freaking over-sized crate and lose track of me.
Also consider how inconvenient it is for AI collections. I can't get the damn Heretic Elites to stop jumping over my supply cases and breaching my weapons cache making me have to revert again and again. It's so freaking hard to contain the Elites in the hangar on The Arbiter.
Finally, forts on OS during the IWHBYD battle. IIRC, Elites can climb up the crates.
Think about how you're on the supply case and a marine tries to climb and push you off (happens in H3). That can get very annoying. Climbing over a supply case on it's face, that's reasonable. But climbing over an upright supply case or one on it's side, there's nothing tactical other than exposing oneself to enemy fire.
In Reach, on LNoS, troopers always get past my wall blockade by climbing unless I put those smaller shields in front of the crates.
There is nothing good that can come from crate climbing. Absolutely nothing!
Jumping over crates would look more realistic than climbing. I'm actually glad Elites in Reach don't climb anymore and that their jump height is so small that it's negligent to breaching my setup. Now marines just need to stop climbing and try making futile short jumps and I'd be happy.
Megabattles in H2 and H3 are so inconvenient because of stuff like this. CE has 4. H2 has 1 (and the numbers aren't even that big). H3 has 1 (and the enemies are mostly territorial). That's how far Halo has gone. From huge battles to linear gameplay.
One of the reasons I am still working with H2 is that it's not as devoid and limited as H3 or Reach.
