Subject: Question Regarding the Halo Array at the End of "Cryptum"

I'm trying to confirm my thinking after re-reading "Halo: Cryptum" .

1. In Chapter 40, Bornstellar sees six Halo rings, each hovering above a Petal of The Ark, then later in chapter 41 he states that only one Halo made it through the portal intact and it returned to the Ark and was being repaired.

Does that mean there are a total of 7 rings now at the Ark? Or was the one ring that survived the passage through the portal that he referred to one of the 6 already there?

Are the rings at The Ark part of the 12 that were once at the capital? I know at least one is, but were the others being freshly made or did 5 or 6 (according to the above question) of the original 12 somehow make it back?

This is puzzling to me because on the last page of the novel Bornstellar talks about how they still need to find the missing halo containing the captive, even though that halo showed up at the Capital. I guess this implies that Mendicant Bias took off with that ring once again after the battle of the Capital?

2. We only know for certain, I think, that 3 rings have been destroyed. 1st one by the fighters of the first fortress. 2nd one was the one Bornstellar tried to enter before it was destroyed by another fortress. 3rd because as far as we know only two rings went into the portal before it closed. But only one came out. That leaves 3 rings destroyed. 9 left.

So if 7 rings did in fact make it back to the Ark, and Mendicant took off again with the one holding the captive, that leaves one ring unaccounted for. Maybe it was destroyed at the capital or in the portal collapse. Or maybe 10 rings were destroyed at the Capital or during the portal collapse, one made it through the portal, Mendicant Bias has the one with the captive, and the 6 rings already at the Ark are replacement rings.

3. On a separate note, did the rings at the capital have flood on them? I wonder this because when the Lifeworkers rescued Bornstellar's Falco, they immediately asked if he was from the damaged ring that tried to make it back to the Ark, and then Immediately asked if there was infection aboard.

Also it was part of the deal between the Librarian and MB Faber that they test captured flood subjects on the population of the Halo rings before they were fired.

Has this puzzled anyone else? I know there are only 2 days left until "Primordium" and maybe it will explain but I just wanted to ask. also sorry if there is a similar thread to this already.

...Thoughts?

We are all going to get banned aren't we?

Well we agreed to wait until primordium to try understanding this but..

I love cryptum yet this is the only thing i don't understand in the entire novel.

There were 12 rings at the ark, medicant bias gained control of 5 (including his own) he tried to control 6 but it was resisting his control.

One Ring made a break for it and got to the portal no problem, Another tried yet was destroyed. We then have Bornstellar about to go through the portal with another ring and he comments how the portal is changing colors due to extreme stress.
He look back, and he notes that the remaining halos under MB's control are about to fire on the capital while the others are rushing for the portal while attacking forerunner ships.

He wakes up (after an unknown amount of time) and comments on how there are rings within each of the arks arms (8). He then mentions the ring that made it through, how damaged it is (his ring?) and that he would make sure that no other rings would make it to the ark seeking repairs.

That is what i got out of it.

Expressing my strong liberal views without shame. Favorite quotes below:

"Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe."
"One starts to live when he can live outside himself."

To my understanding, five were under MB's control, the remaining seven tried to flee, one was destroyed, and six made it through.
