Titles are eye candy. Nothing more. It is something that people work towards though, and in my opinion it has led to less rule-breaking (if you can believe that). What's amusing is seeing a lot of users in this thread claiming they're worthless when I remember them trying so hard to gain a title. Sure, it may be worthless to you now, but when you were newer, it made you more active and perhaps it made you less likely to break a rule.

Personally, I'd prefer if we kept the system (or a similar system implemented), but instead of prefixes we're allowed to add in our own custom title. To gain this right of custom title, you must be here for an X number of days/years.

I was one of those users, but when I received my title. This is how I know they mean nothing. I think bungie forums need to stop trying to be unique because that is what's wrong with the forums.

Checking out my profile I see?

The titles are fine, it's the people who are messed up.

I've talked to so many new or regular members who know just as much as any Mythic out there. What do you think community?
Who ever said that titles are a proxy for knowledge?
It's a stereotype.

I think the titles should stay. They represent how long they've been a member of bungie.net.

Coup sucks now anyways, so it's not like it matters.

Not sure if troll.

You want B.net to stop being unique? How? What's wrong with the way the forums are set up? Should we make the switch to vBulletin?

  • 01.02.2012 6:55 AM PDT

Aside from Ninja or Employee - I've never seen anyone on here truely take member titles seriously...

...you know - except me. I took a screenshot of The Flood with my title bar, got it blown up and put on a 1,000ft. X 1,000 canvas and attached to the back of an airplane and flown over my house 24/7.

  • 01.02.2012 7:31 AM PDT

I dont even pay attention to titles and usually treat mythics or any other higher ranks the same as I do to a regular member.

Other forum can have custom titles, we can't bungie.net need to be unique. Other forums we can upload our own avatar we can't here bungie.net wan't to be unique. That's my example. Also that wasn't a troll it was me giving my opinion.

And why is that a bad thing? The title system here is a good enough fit for B.net. Allowing people to upload avatars and make custom titles would only create problems for the site and its moderators. It would turn B.net into a Black Ops lobby full of 15 year old boys who think that horses banging gorillas in their playercard is funny.

Those were examples. I get what your saying well not the 15 year olds and monkey stuff, but anyway. My point was users are making to big of a deal about them. I just don't like the elitism.

It's not really an issue of elitism. Alot of the members that have the highest-ranked titles simply don't care. Elitism is perceived by lower-titled members because they feel higher-ranked members get special treatment.

Elitism is perceived by lower-titled members because they feel higher-ranked members get special treatment and covet what the other guy's title is (keeping up with the Jones'es syndrome).

Just an idea off of the top of my head... but curious as to what people think.

Imagine a user option to "opt out" of titles. And when you do, you don't see the titles of any members. Everyone (except the web team and ninja) shows up as "member". But by selecting this option, the displayed title for the member (to those who are opting in and seeing/displaying titles) is something to indicate that they "aren't playing the game". For example, the term "Member" but the text of the title is in gold to show that they don't want their title shown and they can't see (and don't care about) yours.
I predict war between the title-people and the non-title-people.

I think there need to be newer titles that have creative ways to unlock. Until that day coup will suffice.

Why?

The point of opting out is a clear marker of indiffernce, and blindness to the subject. If I were one of the people who opted out, no one could claim that I cared about titles or thought higher of some members than others based on the color of their title bar. My altered title color would show that I can't SEE those things, and so, they don't influence me.

In other words, I would be the Swiss. Counting my incredibly secure money, following efficient schedules, eating chocolate efficiently, checking the time on an incredibly accurate timepiece and polishing my precisely made and maintained rifle in case anyone wants to test how serious I am about my neutrality, and occasionally taking time out to guard the Pope.

I think they need a redo. Posts without ban, rather than length of time here, should be the major factor here.

Multiple bans and temp bans almost completely reset your forum ranking. So they do have an effect.

Posted by: The Storm
Keep it the same, just like always.

Except members titles were technically a change. So are you advocating that they stay or be removed? >.>

In my opinion, users on a forum need something to work towards that makes them want to contribute to the community. Bungie.net didn't offer that in the past. There were no titles, no join dates, no post counts... the only thing that anyone had to differentiate themselves was forum signatures and then those got hidden behind a tiny little button that no one ever clicks.

The forum was stale and in the end the only thing that kept you active was the community itself and that took a lot of work to dig down towards. So many spam posts, trolls and people flaming each other that getting to the core of the community was difficult.

I think the member titles give you much more motivation to stick with it and discover what this forum has to offer through rewarding you. Before the only reward there was here was not being banned. With that in mind I say keep them. The positives from having them far outweigh any negatives and so far it seems people have taken them pretty well. The original opinion on these when I brought them up all those years ago was that the forum would run rampant with elitism. Nobody trusted anyone with anything here. Glad that now this forum seems to have grown a little more trusting of its fellow members.
