Oh yeah, since somebody does not believe what YOU believe; that makes us vapid...
I cannot grasp that what you call "Something happened to nothing, and that nothing became something, and it was smaller than than a period."

They are a symbol of your length of stay on here. And, unless you have short term memory loss, you learn stuff here and remember it, so you can give that vital information to newer users to know and use.
The titles tell us who those wise people are.
Also, woot!!! 200th post!

Someone should write that down and put it somewhere really visible.

We shouldn't respect a member based on his title. That is part of them problem.

I learned in high-school. Respect is what you give to any girl with whom you reach or get past 3rd base.

It was a valuable lesson and has remained true after all of these years.

Well, thanks for your input. I really need it ;}. I always thought it was 2nd.

A user can be a regular user, and be wise.

There is one good aspect of titles. They keep members, who care about titles, from breaking as many rules.

Positive vibes.

Honestly, I don't care. I don't care if people take the title system too seriously, and I don't care if people want to get rid of the title system altogether.

I can agree with that. As stated some place in this thread, it has reduced the bad behavior on the forums.

Tru7h. C4RN4GE. Bungie.

For me it is a personal accomplishment if and when I reach Mythic. Other members' titles don't affect me.

My point has been proven in multiple threads today...

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

This whole ordeal reminds me of a story I once read. Went something like this...

The Earth was old and grey, to start off quoting Queen. Humanity was booming! Production capability peaked and resources were being mined out of the deepest mines.

But this was a problem.

You see, no matter how far they pushed production or resource gathering, population growth would still outpace what humanity could deliver. You can see where this is going.

All the great powers of the world gathered. A solution was needed, and fast. Euthenasia, reproduction limits, forced war... Lots of ideas were tossed around, but nothing would solve the problem permanently.

Finally, a conclusion was reached. The bounds that kept Humanity on Earth had to be broken.

A planet was found. A ship was built. Hundreds of people were chosen.

Technology, though, was not where it needed to be. You see, there was no cryo-sleep, stasis, or what have you. People lived, loved, gave birth, and died for several generations on this great interplanetary journey. The ship provided everything that the people needed. Exercise, food, medicine, entertainment, education. All was given.

Years went by, and the planet drew closer.

Seven generations. That's what it took to get there. Humanity still existed on Earth, but it was a struggle everyday. They were glad, though, for our genes, what made our species, would survive on the new planet and, with luck and faith, flourish.

Finally, the day came when the great ship was to reach the planet. And you know what happened? It kept right on sailing by, into the great void of space!

What happened? Well, you see, it was only the first generation of space travelers that knew, really knew why they, why Humanity, left Earth. Their children had a decent grasp on the concept, as they heard the stories told by their parents of over crowding, struggling, and wanting to feel the sun, long blotted out, on their faces. That would have been sufficient, had they been the generation to arrive at the planet, but they weren't.

Their children's children's great grand children's children were. And all they knew was the spaceship. The spaceship that gave them everything they needed. They didn't know struggle, they didn't know why their ancestors left. And thus, faced with the looming challenges of starting from scratch, they tossed in the towel.

Sound a little familiar? I hope it does, a bit. You see, back in the day, people fought over petty things to prove their opinion was worth something. Join dates, ranks, who they knew. All these were petty.

Thus, member titles were made to help alleviate some of the woes the community faced. Believe me when I say, it wasn't a spur of the moment thing. This concept took a while! It helped members see who has been here a while, whether or not someone's comment was more likely eccentric, out-of-the-box thinking, or just simply luring people in to argument.

Believe me, it did help.

But now, "many generations later," many of the members might not know about how bad it was, why we had to leave Earth, if you see where my metaphor is going.

Don't take something away on a whim. Trust those that came before you that they acted out of the community's best interest and not malice.

That's all I've got to say.

I think titles are fine. It would be sad to see them go, as I haven't had the chance to become higher than a normal member yet...

This would explain your lack of respect for women. (Oh snap)

Achronos: And what's this about a "design team" I've been hearing? Apparently stosh is so awesome he's now considered a "team".

The concept of a trust system where people with higher titles are more trust-worthy is good. The titles system being a game though I am not so fond of. I personally believe that there should be two titles for members; 1 being Member and the other being Trusted. The latter of the 2 given to members who have proven their trustworthiness and are respected amongst the community.

Yes, it probably would. However you are cutting all the other ranks and the ranks are based entirely of trustworthiness then.

That would kind of cut out the elitism, but then it would cut out the fun. Achronos did say in one of his post that "the forum titles are for fun".

I thought fun was not allowed on here. Seems like the ones that have fun are labeled trolls and banned.

When enlightenment is the question. The Answer is Pain.
When Ignorance is the problem. The Answer is Blood.
When love is absent. Hatred fills the void.

Wow, I remember back in my day when this was still an issue for people...

People seem to forever complain about how titles are meaningless/abused/makes people think that a member with a higher title has more respect.

Well logically, yes they would. Someone who has been around (anywhere) for 3 years is definitely more experienced than someone who came in a month ago...would someone in need of help or advice really go to the newbie or the "veteran"?

There will always-everywhere you look-in everything people congregate in large populations, be that group of people who are immature and stupid no matter how long they've been there...how about dealing with the idiots themselves rather than saying the titles are the problem.

In all honesty I've read enough of these threads to know that the problem is not just those immature people but also the people who time and time again request the removal of titles or something like that because they do not like the fact that they don't have the top title...then try to say its because of something so general and convenient its sad.

Call this trolling. Call this "me being a jerk", but really what is this madness?

My only qualms with titles is that a warning strips it.

I'm smelling a conspiracy. The day after I said this I ended up with my previous rank and a new one.

There is no greater catharsis than arguing on the Flood.

lol I remember every single day seeing a post by machinimagames in the title thread last year about how he should have the next title/wondering when he will

If you don't like the system, just ignore it.

I called it "hilarious."
