Before you start reading this please remember this is meant only as constructive critisism. Also realize that I'm a complete neard who has read all the books up to this point.
The explanation for the trailor told us that the planet Master Chief was on was Earth. It also said there was an artifact on that planet.
Halo 2 ended with MC coming back to Earth on a Covenant Ship... earth was still under human control at this point. All the defense platforms were still up.
This means they can't start Halo 3 in the way the trailor shows unless the trailor actually takes place on Reach, which is where the artifact was in the book. That also means the events that took place in the trailor would have to take place somewhere toward the middle of the game because the end of H2 still puts MC on Earth.
Look I know all this is ridiculous and confusing but the real point is that I would like to see the story progress in a straight line. The game already broke away from the book which was kind of expected. Just don't change the ending of Halo 2 by having Halo 3 start somewhere else without explainting what the heck is going on between the two games.
The trailor looked Great though. I got chills.

Back in my day we didn't have no fancy lasers, and the hogs were indestructible!

It's plainly on Earth, remember that the covenant now also have a fully functional Forerunner ship. Which could probably wipe aside all our defenses in minutes and the fact that covenant ships absolutely own human ones it takes roughly three Halcyon cruisers to one Covenant battlecruiser, the Leviathon Marathon class cruiser which is the largest and most powerful cruiser built by humans is still dwarfed by the Assault class carriers shown in the trailer they are five times it's size. So it is easy to understand how Earth could have been so devastated by the covenant fleet so easily and so quickly

The book "First Strike" is kind of in an alternate universe, i guess would be the est way to explain that. Halo doesn't follow the same story line, for some odd reason. That was just a piece of fiction that wasn't canonized. Reach IS destroyed. The covenant didn't know where earth was, as stated in that book, they just knew where a planet with a forerunner facility was, which happened to be earth. Its not the same story, so, count that out all together.

"The trailer is set in the African desert, and it was taken from roughly a third of the way through the game."

ok ok ok stop all this speculating, that trailer given that is a real-time trailer, does not give anything away from the game except that he is back to earth. thats it.

They say where it is though! They don't say this could be anywhere. They say, the African desert, which is why the invaded Mombassa in the first place

i read the books too, and to my knowlege the artifact found on reach was some kinda crystal that was sposed to be a star-map to "the ark" which is why the wanted it. and the end of H2 they make it suggestive that "the ark" is buried on earth. thats why at the start of H2 the covenant came to earth with a small fleet, b/c they were looking for the ark, and they didnt know it was the human homeworld. now for our defenses, the Old covenant (brutes, profets, etc...) still have most of the fleet, and when MC got back the defenses around earth were pretty banged up. more than likely the trailor takes place, in my opinion, about 3/4 of the way into the game. i say that b/c i believe that the final missions will be for us to stop them from getting to the ark.
