They just go missing in action.

From what I have have gathered, Bungie is making some form of MMO so economy is basically just like the PI designer.

Personally I think nearly every game has had an "Economic Designer" of sorts in more recent memory.
Confirming this. It's very common these days to have someone properly trained in economics (though more econometrics and statistics) to aid in the analysis and design of game "economies". Persistence in multiplayer is just so common and so key to long-term revenue generation, even in FPSes, that you need a thorough understanding of how players make their choices. This isn't the first economy-related post on the jobs listing, if memory serves.

Interesting.

Bungie, I request moar. I'm not in the mood to demand just yet.
As much as I concur with this feeling, do you remember the darkness before the Halo launches? Random photos would get taken/found with blurry things in the background. People would then ask if that green thing in the blurry background was indeed something green and they wouldn't reply. :) I doubt we have a chance in getting an explanation for why their new game needs deep application of econometrics.

Well said. Econometrics is used incredibly well in sports and continues to enter more fields. It only makes sense for gaming studios to snag economists with a solid understanding of econometrics/statistics to promote better player investment.

"Drive players to invest in our game economy by analyzing the subtleties of behavioral economics and pondering the pitfalls of specialization and free trade."

"Required Skills:
Degree in Economics and/or professional working experience with online game economies."

It seems odd to me that they'd specify 'free trade' and experience with an 'online game economy' if they're just going to be there to work on econometrics.

Knowing economic theory and how markets operate with regards to whatever is going on in the game is important, but I assume the job will rely heavily on data mining for the proper variables to use in econometric models. These models can be used to do a myriad of things depending on what questions are posed.

Econometrics is the application of math and statistics to economic data. It essentially is a way of providing empirical evidence to either accept or refute theory in a given situation. I'm taking a class on it right now. Its very interesting.

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

What do you mean, "just" econometrics?

READ IT.

I won the Star. With this on Week 18.

Probably someone who designs how the economy works in their new universe... comparing modern prices of fuel, minerals, livestock, etc with what is in the game, mixing it up, turning it around, throwing it over a fence... and bam, a new economy that will make our heads spin for the first part of the game.

I came for Halo, but I heard the Tru7h, fought thru Carnage, and stayed for Bungie.

Whatever economy they create I will wreck with hyper-inflation.
