Here's some parameters.

Ask them if the want to be the best at the game. If yes Competitive. If no Casual.

I play games indiscriminately, have no loyalty to a franchise and loathe ranked offerings; I want to crush everyone I see and be better than all of them.

Casual: relaxed or unconcerned.

1. Beside having arena divisions (which apparently very few people still play), there is no incentive to play this game competitively online.
-> more casual

2. The K/D experiments show what? Either that the casual players got better, more new players started playing this game, the game got easier (with the help of AA) or the good players (competitive) stopped playing.
Also in my experience, comparing most casual players' K/D shows a significant rise from halo 3 to reach.

3. Reason for this?
Let's assume some good players quit and some new ones joined.
The sheer amount of players obviously decreased, but the percentages of casual, good and new players will have stayed more or less the same in comparison to halo 3.
What's left? The game got easier, more COD-like.
Watch the MLG circuit, stuff like jet pack, sprint etc makes it far too easy to break a setup.

In my opinion this is the least competitive halo.
Also adding bloom was a terrible decision.
You're an idiot.

Yep.

When I play, I'm always thinking about "What those MLG guys would do", I memorize the callouts, learn the flow of the map and try to get my aim better.

Now, I almost never miss with the DMR or NR, my K/D improved 0.50 points, and I'm consistently better than 90% of the random I play with.

If anyone's loyal to Mass Effect it's me. I'm convinced Mass Effect 3 is going to be a massive disappointment and I'm still pre-ordering the collector's edition.

It's my favourite series, but I don't swear allegiance to it. (But it is the pinnacle of goodness)

And Mass Effect is well-known for its massively-competitive online multiplayer :D

I can't really comment on the relation between this game and Halo 3's multiplayer. I have no idea about the boundaries between social and competitive either .. I don't even know which category I fall into. Some days I get mad if we lose, I go neg, etc. Others I don't care.

But in my opinion it seems like the addition of SOME armor abilities could have made the game more difficult. I'm talking Jetpack and Sprint.

Used by good players, Jetpack can seriously break map control, and Sprint is a tool that allows someone to escape circumstances where, without it, they'd probably be dead.

Now keep in mind when I talk about these armor abilities in use, I'm not talking about the kids that just fly around the maps like idiots, or those that just use sprint to get across the map (in my opinion sprint is an escape utility) while being team shot to death, over and over and over.

When playing against a good team, it's difficult to hold your position against a bunch of good jetpackers. And when you're putting shots on a player, who turns and runs using sprint to put 2 or 3 corners between you or him en route to a 'close call' medal, IMO that's great use of the ability. Someone like that is hard to kill.
Its been pointed out to me that casual is a spectrum and it will be hard to set perfectly drawn lines defining a casual. But I am going to start trying to fing qualifications for competitive players.

As a casual observer, it appears to me that most competitive players flatout hate AA. Do you think this woould be a fair statement?

Rc, how am I supposed to implement this as a qualification? If I put that in, I honestly believe it would not be taken serious. I will provide an example.
Competitive qualifications:
1. A competitive player when asked if they desire to be the "best at the game" will respond yes.

Casual qualifications:
1. A casual when asked if he desires to be the "best at a game" will respond no.

Now when you see that written as qualifications, does that appear like a serious parameter?

I'd say that works fine, however a casual player is unlikely to falt out say no, rather I'd expect an "I don't know/care", or simply "It's fun" because nobody genuinely wants to be worse than their peers at anything.
