Subject: Sword vs. Source - Why not both?

Why not both? Because Marty said it was sword, and he's the sound guy.
And this thread was not original.

This thread is ORIGINAL.
It is not the same as what a third of this forum is filled with.

For those who have no idea what this is about:
In the trailer, Cortana is talking to the spartan with the assault rifle and strange new gloves and tan-colored armor. She says "I am your shield. I am your-" and the last word of that sentence has been argued about. Some believe that it is "...your sword." while others believe that it is "...your source."

My question is this:
Why can't it be both? It sounds like Cortana, Gravemind, and maybe one other person is talking at once, saying the same (or, according to my theory, similar) words. Maybe Gravemind says "sword" and Cortana says "source"! Do you think that this is plausable? What might this mean if it is true? You've heard my theory, now share your thoughts.

Your theory sucks. JK, but its sword. The part people is confused about is audio feedback, where the beginning of the word is replayed at the same time as the d is being said.

Like this:

I am your shield, I am your Sword
...............................................Sword.<------- audio feedback.

That doesn't really answer the question since every single word besides that was easily understood. I think that it is hard to understand on purpose, wouldn't you say?

um. no.

Audio quality and signal changes rapidly. Ever use a cell phone? If you have a bad signal, you can still understand some things, others not so much.

lets not overlook the fact that cortana probably didn't repeat the letter "i" 6 or 7 times at the beginning of each phrase either. It's the signal feedback/overlay that you're hearing STRICTLY for effect. Nothing more.

ULF, do you not think the Bungie staff would have scrutinised it? If it was not supposed to have a double meaning, it would have had the 'audio feedback' removed.

Marty O'Donnell himself has already confirmed that people have overactive imaginations. It's shield and sword. OF COURSE.

It makes me sick with how little confidence I have in my fellow man. If I were Bungie, I'd be so embarassed for the fans that can't understand something so simple that I'd just call off halo 3 all together.

I am 100% sure that it is "SWORD" how sure is that? that's... "I'll cut off my testicles, wrap them in hundred dollar bills, and send them to the first person that replies after me that thinks it's "SOURCE" if it is source" ...sure.

That's pretty sure.

And as for the Subject line of this thread, Why not both? because it's -blam!-ing sword!

Why on earth would Cortana jump from sheilds to sources? Put things in context people.

You really didn't provide any proof in your post. It may well just be the hissing sound of static, but I still believe it could be a double meaning.

LOL. Retard, it's there for effect. Bungie are the ones that put it in. As in, Cortana has a bad signal with whoever it is she is talking to.

It's generally hard to find the links in the mass of topics here.

Oh, and good idea, F90. Please PM me any results you may get, thanks.

Damn I just watched and I am positive that see said source you can hear it easily just listen to it again you can hear the W in it and at the end you hear a long S in there so I think it is Source. And this is at about 52-58 seconds in.

Special_Spartan, I agree, the source sound is quite easily audible.

Metallica, no it doesn't really matter much, but I have too much time on my hands!

"Sure. I can't move a rock with my mind, but, boy, can I make that rock think it's been moved."

While I think it's sword, I am not surprised that the ones to defend the theory that it is both are the only ones who have yet to be rational and keep their tempers' under control. Try to remember that this is just a theory, those of you who insist on hurling insults because someone has a different opinion. And saying that it is in several other posts is not giving evidence. Providing a link yourself, since you seem to have one, is.

Ok, thank you for the link. But it's not complete proof that it is sword and only sword. If 'source' plays some large part in the game, it's unlikely that they would willingly say that it is both. Bungie, I think, are generally known for being great at keeping secrets.

Cortana may be saying sword, but as you can hear at the beginning of her speech with the "I have defied Gods and demons" you can easily hear at least 2 different voices, so what's to say one of these other voices isnt' saying 'source'?

because it's an echo. It's sword being said twice, but the "S" from the second sword is being played starting where the "d" sound is faintly heard. So it sounds (not obviously) like source, but it's actually Sword.

Since Cortana is essentially a copy of the brain of one Doctor Catherine Halsey. It should make perfect sense to be source.

Shield - Dr. Halsey (and Cortana) have protected the Chief and all of the other Spartans from a lot of major problems, from Covenant to Colonel Ackerson. Intel provided by Cortana has saved John-117's life countless times.

Source - Dr. Halsey was basically the mother figure and the very source of the idea for the SPARTAN project. She was an adviser to John-117 before she disappeared, just like Cortana was before John returned to Earth.

This has got to be one of the only credible theories surrounding this mystery, because no one can truly explain what the meaning of the word "sword" would be in the context of Cortana (or even Gravemind). Cortana is still an independent being as far as we can tell (what kind of sentient life form can corrupt an AI without access to its' power or diagnostics?).

As for the "sword" theory, I have a challenge. Come up with a credible, contextually accurate meaning for the word "sword" to justify your reasoning.

Even if Marty O'Donnell (aka the King of Orchestra) says its' sword...
