humans are the desendents (or maybe creation) of the forerunners that survived in the ark (which is on earth) when the forerunners activated the halos to stop the flood, thus humans are called reclaimers

The ark activates all the other remaining rings on demand. As you might know, when one of the rings is activated it destroyes everything in the galaxy. The covenant want to activate them for their great journey but they dont know what happens when they do. Thats why you have to stop them. In the end of halo 2 343 guilty spark explains all this.

what is THE ARK?

The Ark of the Covenant (ארון הברית in Hebrew: aron habrit) is described in the Hebrew Bible as a sacred container built at the command of Moses, wherein rested the stone tablets containing the Ten Commandments. The Ark and its sanctuary were "the beauty of Israel" (Lamentations 2:1). Rashi and some Midrashim suggest that there were two arks - a temporary one made by Moses and a later one made by Bezalel (Hertz 1936).

During the journeys of the Israelites, the Ark was carried by the priests in advance of the host (Numbers 4:5, 6; 10:33-36; Psalms 68:1; 132:8). The Ark was borne by priests into the bed of the Jordan, which separated, opening a pathway for the whole of the host to pass over (Joshua 3:15, 16; 4:7, 10, 11, 17, 18). The Ark was moreover borne in the procession round Jericho (Josh. 6:4, 6, 8, 11, 12). When carried, the Ark was always wrapped in a veil, in badger skins, a blue cloth, and was carefully concealed, even from the eyes of the Levites who carried it.

The idea that the Ark can control the rings lends credence to the idea that this a time anomaly. The rings were fired once long ago according to 343 then they lay dormant because there was no life...then the humans and convenant showed up. It strikes me as odd that in the first game u just "happen" to jump to a ring. I think the chief will use earth/ark to escape the convenant and activate the rings while leaving either on purpose or by accident. This release of energy during a slipspace jump would cause havok possibly causing him to be sent back in time. U know how i know this? Because its a classic scientific plot and bungie loves those

But in the first halo the pillar of autumn made a random jump to escape from reach which was being attacked by the covenant and when they made the jump the cheif was in cryogenic sleep.

Actually, I don't believe it was a random jump.

I'm almost positive the books said they cordinates had something to do with the starmap on the rock or something.
