Subject: Ranks - Bring them Back!!!

I want to bring up ranks. I know this has been discussed in other threads but bungie and 343 need to bring back ranks for Halo 4. Dropping the ranking system they used in Halo 2 and Halo 3 for the one in Reach is to me and thousands of other halo players a horrible decision. They followed the ranking system in Call of Duty, you play a lot and no matter how good you are, you go up in rank.
If you don't know what I'm on about watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpOyb5vRuSE - a video from Pro player Ninja. He brings up some very good points in why the ranking system from Halo 2 and 3 needs to be brought back.
Some people didn't like the ranking system in halo 3 and 2 because people who get 50s are cocky and dumb asses. To be honest some of them are but like 95% are not. They to win that's why they're 50s.
But halo 3 fixed that with their exp ranking system so players who cant get a high skill 50 can get a 5 star general in EXP and people who have 50s can show off even further that they have a 5 star general in exp and a 50 in a playlist.
I ranting on a lot about this because the old ranking system especially the one in Halo 3 is what made Halo multiplayer way different and better from other top selling multiplayer games. Now every multiplayer game is like the same nothing stands out of the crowd.

I got to bring up one more thing too.

Every Halo player has to realize Halo is not Call of Duty. Its way more skilled based than Call of Duty. That's why the ranking system in Halo 3 and 2 made sense. Halo is a way more competitive than any other game on console because it's skilled based that's why MLG features Halo primarily on its live circuit.

I have played Call of Duty and Halo franchises every since they released them back in the day, so I know how they play. From the ridiculous amount of hours I have played on both games Halo is like 90% skill and 10% positioning in terms of multiplayer based and COD is the opposite that's from experience. The skill required to be good in COD is way way way way less the skill needed to be in Halo.

And from the sales point of view, If you looks at the multiplayer population of Halo 2 and Halo 3 they were consistently in the hundreds of thousands and in Reach its not even close. So people bought Reach and stopped playing it because the multiplayer sucked (the most logical reason and the reason I found from friends and players I played a lot against in the Halo 2 and 3).

Now day...wait...nvm i'm tired.

I don't like the rank system as it is now, but I wasn't really happy with H3's (never played H2 online) like the idea but I feel like I've been on the same rank forever on that game, which I have since I haven't played it in awhile.

Halo 4. No one knows.

Did you know that The Arena playlist is based on win/loss?

Inheritor #156 :p

Looks like we're going to have to wait until Halo 4, there's no point in doing it this late in Reach.

If you lost more often in Halo 3

  • 01.02.2012 1:53 PM PDT

Yeah for beginners but those who like playing competitively hate it which is most of the multiplayer halo population. For instance 4 pros can go into MLG in Reach and play 4 people who just started playing reach, a totally unfair match and whats so psychologically correct about that.
If that happened to me I would get turned away from playing the game anymore. The old ranking system separated good players from bad players pretty much all the time unless you go into social but that's where players dick around, not have their try hard pants on in ranked to get their rank up.
Getting a 50 in Halo 3 and 2 (unfortunately didn't get a 50 in H2) gives a way more feeling of accomplishment than getting an inheritor in Reach.
Getting a 50 took skill not just time to get and Inheritor takes no skill, just play for a long ass time and there you go inheritor, no true feeling of accomplishment. It's like getting a 10th prestige in COD4, yes i was happy i got one but I was like wow i played this game A LOT to get it.

I think that there is potential in bringing ranks back, but not to all playlists.

Merge 'The Arena' and 'MLG'. Make them one playlist. People that play with friends/teammates go into MLG to win, have them compete in wins and losses.

Introduce incentives for people to play playlists. Make more fun gametypes into playlists.

I think that the management of different types of players is lacking right now. Sometimes I jump on and just want to play some damn Rockethog. Or Speed Halo. You know, fun stuff where you can't get frustrated, but still compete.

There's a LOT of unrealized potential that could make the Halo games the perfect shooters, but they aren't there yet.

*sidenote: Before someone bites me saying I can play Rockethog in Action Sack; I know. But more playlists so you can jump in to exactly what you want is what I'm saying.

And for the love of all that is Halo, make the achievements unlockable on all maps. I purchased Noble and Defiant for what? I can't even find them to play on Matchmaking anymore. It's a disgrace.

There's always room for you, If you want to be my friend.

Make the system based on only win/loss rather than by who you play against. The halo 3 system was severely flawed and boosters and de-rankers started appearing because of this.

Halo 4 we still have hope for a good rank system. But reach was dead on day 1.

But Reach was dead on day 1.

Exactly why hundreds of thousands of people play Reach every week, right?

What kind of ranking system do we need? It seems like Reach's kind of failed because it did not show much skill, just how long you have played. Halo 3 was pretty good. The skill level thing sometimes made ranking up hard, but it felt somewhat good to reach a certain rank. Halo 2 was similar except it was just skill level, which seemed to make it pretty competitive.

In Halo 4, what if three different points determined rank. Credits (From Reach) to show how long the person played, Experience points (Halo 3) to show the number of wins, which shows some skill; and Skill Level/Arena Division (Halo 2, 3 and Reach) to show a kind of competitive skill.

Credits and Experience Points

Together these two can form the rank insignia (Sergeant, Captain, Commander, etc.). Credits are earned like in Reach, including buying from the armory, but to get to the next rank, you need to get a certain amount of wins (Experience Points from Halo 3). For example, to become a Captain, you might need 200 experience points (wins) and a certain amount of credits. No wins could mean no ranking up past, say, Gunnery Sergeant Grade 4, like in Halo 3, which had Skill Level instead. Experience points can be like a softer Skill Level.

Note: If Firefight still exists, wins do not count in it. Wins are only recorded in Multiplayer Matchmaking.

Note 2: There will be both Social and Ranked Playlists, so wins can be recorded in both.

Skill Level/Arena Division

For this, let's combine Reach's and Halo 3's skill levels. First off, there can be a Ranked Playlist, in which you have a number skill level that acts like it did in Halo 3 (wins: goes up. losses: goes down). Now, at every 10 or so skill level points you earn a sort of division title, which came from Reach (Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Onyx).
Here is the order:
1-9: None
10-19: Iron
20-29: Bronze
30-39: Silver
40-49: Gold
50+: Onyx

This part of the rank also follows the insignia in every playlist. You will see a player's rank insignia with an iron, bronze, silver, gold, or onyx symbol following.

Note: You can still rank up without Skill Level/Arena Division.

Note 2: Credit Earning could be lowered a bit in Ranked because of already earning skill.

Together, the rank consists of how long you've played, wins/losses, and skill level.
A rank can look somewhat like this:

Lieutenant Grade 3 --- Gold ( [Lieutenant Symbol] --- [Gold Symbol] )

This shows that a player has not played very long, but is a pretty good competitive player.
The above is opposed to this:

General Grade 4 --- Iron ( [General Symbol] --- [Iron Symbol] )

Now, this shows a player who has played a considerable amount of time, but has not either played competitively (Ranked) or is not a very competitive player.

With these ranks, it shows at a glance really how good of a player a person is.

This is my solution. It's not perfect, but it can be tweaked.

Reality is broken.

Also, you're not your stats.

Rank meant nothing in H3, it means nothing in Reach.

You're only as good as your DMR skills.
