I would argue that almost every spot on the internet harbors some form of immaturity at some capacity. It all goes the same for Bungie.net. I reiterate some of the things already said in this thread when I say there is a sort of "High School" complex you can find in here.

There is also a maturity that has to go on and this maturity is established through participating in the Bnet community longer. The longer you are here, the more you learn, and the less you do wrong (if you want to). If you want to participate in the main forums you try to stick to the rules while still interacting with the community in some way, shape, or form.

If you don't want these nice things, then you stay immature, don't care, and see what happens. Simple.

I know this may be a bit of a shocker to you, but the average age of the Bnet community is 13-21. Don't expect all the users to be mature. I understand your frustration, but, in all honesty, it's not that big of a problem. Most users that post inappropriate pictures are locked and banned quickly enough. Just report, and move on.

If I had a Rocket Launcher, I'd make somebody pay.

You could always start a private group.

Giggity.

Sorry, I know.. I should be setting an example. But that one was just too easy.

We're concerned

Got a question, comment, or concern? PM me.

I don't think that it is really the member or the effects from other members. I think it is mainly due to the fact that there are too many privileges allowed to users.

Think about it, if you were given leniency for breaking the rules when you were a kid (In this case, being immature usually leads to breaking the rules by flaming, shock site posting, or something else), and then you broke a rule like saying the word "stupid", would you not break the rule again? Or would you push your luck until you finally got in trouble for it?

The way I see it is when a user breaks a rule, and get away with it, then they will continue to do so until they finally get caught. Refer to that old saying that "With less rules comes more responsibilities", and clearly it is shown that most members cannot handle these responsibilities.

So, does this mean we should have more rules? Well, yes and no, depending on how you see it. Also, please don't take this as me asking for more rules, because I like the freedoms we are given, but if it does get any worse then maybe we should lay down the law a bit more for more things.

I don't see why the term NSFW even exists. Considering you are at work you should not be browsing the internet. If someone posts a NSFW picture, link or whatever and you get caught for not doing your job. There should be nobody to blame but yourself.

I'd figure asshats like those that would post NSFW pictures are pretty much guaranteed to be in any community as large as this one. Websites like 4chan see it all the time, right?

It's just that most websites that allow pictures aren't big enough for anybody to care about seriously causing trouble. Or so I'd guess anyways.

It isn't our shiznit anymore.

Edit: forgot to add before, but Hylebos' theory is fairly in-line with the theory I posted in the linked OP.

I thought at this point it was common knowledge that Bnet is a lot more restrictive than the average Internet forum. We can't even embed pictures or upload custom avatars, which is the norm for many other forums. How have you come to the conclusion that Bnet affords its members too many privileges and how can you consider these excessive privileges as too much to handle for the average member when many other large gaming forums exist just fine with even more privileges granted to users?

@spawn031

"So much of what we do is ephemeral and quickly forgotten, even by ourselves, so it's gratifying to have something you have done linger in people's memories." John Williams

Short and simple or long and serious? Sure, I'll type out a serious one this time.

Back in the days of the Halo 2 forum Zanzibar/New Mombasa and the old Septagon "Screw" there were the same restrictions as there are now. For a short while we were able to post in color on the forums when create out posts. This was before moderators had salmon text and Bungie employees had gold. However, over time these privileges were taken away. The most arbitrary colors were used in abnormal ways and it was insane. It was heavily abused.

It's like never allowing children to have a coloring book as a child and then when they finally hit 4th grade they discover something new for the first time. Somewhat of what the majority of coup is right now. I'm glad for the major overhaul that the webteam put into this site and it's for the better.

Now the question at hand, are we too immature? How do you measure immaturity exactly? What is the formula for this? Is it only posting in proper grammar? Trust rating? Member title? Join date or even some other magical calculation?

Who knows.

The community is very young, as mentioned before average age (13-21), and would heavily abuse these features of posting pictures and colored text. I understand that, and your argument is basically saying - meh forget those young-ins and go with it anyways. They will be banned and learn eventually.

The problem with this is that you aren't rewarded for investing in a single account on Bungie.net. Sure you get a cool looking title and it's fun to see what everyone can contribute too in forums. But if someone literally just made a new account, they could wait 24 hours and have the exact same posting privileges as someone who has been a member here for 10 years.

This website is a game developers website and it would be a great idea to add these functions for the users side. However, because of how easy it is for a user to create multiple accounts and have the same privileges as an experienced user - you cannot trust that new account. It's to easy to manipulate the system and abuse and destroy the privilege for everyone else.

If accounts were rewarded in some kind of point system, where the user has to "unlock" these functions (as described briefly by SonicJohn), I may reconsider it.
