Subject: Thoughts On How a Halo Movie Should Be Handled

erAsed is RIPPIN

Once you go Black you never go back!

This is the best response I have read. I for one would hate to see a Halo movie at all because I don't think anyone would really do it any justice for reasons that have been described already. If, however, a movie were to be made - this is how it should be done.

Avery should be played by Samuel L Jackson!

Plenty of you will probably think I'm a crazy person, but I think the best place to start off a Halo film franchise is Contact Harvest. Before you pull out your torches and pitchforks, hear me out.

The problem all movies based on video games seem to have is mass appeal. If you make it too true to the source material, it many times wont appeal to general audiences, wont bring in enough money, and kind of defeats any studio's incentive to fund it. If you water it down for general audiences, you alienate your core fans.

Anyway, I like to think that we get the latter of those two options more often than not, and the movie just ends up sucking.

To be successful, a film adaptation has to be true enough to its source, and at the same time not make movie executives take their money and run for the hills. There has to be some sort of compromise.

In my opinion, Contact Harvest wouldn't need all that big of a compromise. The beauty of CH is that, while it does take place in the future, it doesn't drop you right into a world of genocidal alien collectives and generically-enhanced super soldiers. Contact Harvest puts you in the shoes of Avery Johnson; while he is later revealed to have undergone some augmentation during the ORION Project, it's not pivotal to CH's plot. Hell, I don't think it's even mentioned.

Anyway, the story starts off with this above average/elite solider who is being deployed fighting who? Terrorists! That's right, terrorists! Can modern audiences sympathize with that without a massive stretch of the imagination? Sure they can! The situation alone sets Johnson up to be a sympathetic character.

Contact Harvest eases the audience into the Halo Universe. It introduces those unfamiliar with Halo without overwhelming them. If successful, it would would likely allow sequels to explore the full depth of the plot without having to compromise as much.

O hai

Contact Harvest is a great idea, and led me to think, why not start at the start. Like an adaptation of The Fall Of Reach book for the silver screen? Throw in operation TREBUCHET, the whole augmentation process, the beginning of the Covenant war, and everything else together and you get some kind of horror/thriller/action/mystery hybrid movie that perfectly sets up the rest of the series.

I believe that THIS is the best idea yet. Obviously a lengthy endeavor, but we've had long movies before, so we can handle it. But having a parallel storyline to the Spartans on Reach with Sergeant Johnson seems like a really workable idea. I say go for it.

Oh, and by the way, actors should not be popularized stars that are too easy to classify as other characters (eg - Bruce Willis, while being an awful choice for Halo to begin with, would furthermore be subconsciously tied with the Die Hard series). Rather, hire rising talent that clearly has what it takes for this kind of production.

Well if you want special effects into the movie, George Lucas should be on board, with Jackson as the Director.

You speak the truth. Georgie and the gang down at ILM did a fantastic job with the animatronics and CGI in the third Star Wars... He would be an ideal candidate for doing the special FX for aliens in the Covenant... Good idea!

Only for Johnson. And that's IF he makes a cameo appearance in the movie.

Oh, and by the way: after having been inspired by Chrisbrowningu, I have begun work on a Halo movie script. While it is heavily influenced by the events of the book, Halo: Fall of Reach, I now have a whole new respect for scriptwriters. Knowing where and when to nix out content for brevity purposes is far more challenging than I would have guessed. Who knew? Anyway, I shall provide more posts on this thread as events warrant. Toodles!

This world wants to drag you down... And the weight, that guilt they want to hang around your neck, you don’t have to carry it one more step. You think they won’t let you rest, but it’s not up to them. It never was.

I was gonna suggest Morgan Freeman for Johnson, but I guess he's too old now.

  • 01.07.2012 9:20 AM PDT

Yeaah.... That sucks. Ooh! I know.. He could be the narrator for a short introductory scene. He's frigging perfect for that kinda thing.

  • 01.07.2012 3:15 PM PDT

when the shroud lifts and the secrets are revealed who will listen

also troll

the person playing john won't matter because he won't ever take off his helmet or speak. Other than that, IF they do make one it should be in line with the rest of the story. I don't want to have to worry about if what happened in the movie happened in the official halo universe.

  • 01.07.2012 3:42 PM PDT

It's kinda hard to make ANY movie where the hero doesnt speak or show his face. Especially if the movie is based on the book, Halo: the Fall of Reach, which covers the "birth of the Spartan.". We would be witnessing John's induction, training, and overall childhood before Halsey even BEGINS construction of the Mjolnir armor system. So we would Have to see his face. It's inevitable.

Soffish for everyone!

Art and Halo = my life... pretty much.

I'd really like to see something done by a nice up and coming european videographer, there are some brilliant sci-fi teams that I have mainly seen through film festivals and vimeo of course. Their take on sci-fi and the impotence of emotional content and well executed cinematic almost makes me cringe when seeing the very superficial hollywood releases on similar subjects. To be honest I want to see something that isn't just a war film and isn't just a sic-fi. Just like how halo puts me in the shoes of a hero without a face, I would like to get some amazing cinematography and storyline that throws me into the movie screen without the overuse of deafening explosions. But thats just my opinion :D

Lastly I want a back story, one that makes the movie a stand-alone and one that appeals to the fans. In short make another Bungie Game...but show me only cut-scenes XD

Keith David could kick Morgan Freeman's ass.

Haha! That's got to be one of the best phrased comments I've heard yet. It's like another Bungie cutscene collection - except based off a Halo NOVEL. I like.

Actually, I agree with this. They can simply call it Halo. Or Halo: Harvest. Then they can come out with a sequel to it, Halo: Combat Evolved. ;)

That IS interesting... naturally, it would set up for further movies fairly well. My only worry is the fact that it could be TOO far back before the actual events on Installation 04. If they made a Harvest movie, logic dictates that a Fall of Reach movie would follow. And including the battle for Installation 04 as the third movie seems a bit far-minded, considering the trouble that went through LOTR becoming a trilogy. Furthermore, there would also have to be Halo 2 and 3 movies as well, making a grand total of five movies. And that's assuming the first one does well, AND the second one. I hate to be so pessimistic, but I've seen too many failed movies modeled after books and video games to count my chickens before they hatch. Ergo, if they make a Halo movie, they should either just jump right into the main story, or do their absolute damndest to exceed beyond expections with a Harvest movie. Thoughts?

I would title them as such:

Halo: Harvest - Contact Harvest
Halo: Fall of Reach - duh
Halo: Combat Evolved - duh
Halo: The Gravemind - First Strike and Halo 2
Halo: Onyx - Halo 3 and Ghosts of Onyx

Do not make the games into movies, trying to do that will fail any other part of the halo lore that has not been made, like contact harvest etc will be better to do.

Contact Harvest is good cause its just the beginning and is a premise to what is going on and how the war began, gives basic facts to general public. Once they know this they can watch any other movies created easily.

As long as it doesn't end up like the 'Super Mario Bros' movie then I'm cool with it.

Bip Bap Bam in the brainpan!

IF Stephen Spielberg made the Halo movie, I would be ok with it, either him or George Lucas.

#1 because Stephen Spielberg has done an excellent job at movies, and especially Sci-Fi ones, but also because he has the necessary experience needed to make such a massive project come to life in a both accurate way to the books, and also in portraying the characters as they were in the books and games.

#2 because George Lucas has that sort of creativity and down to earth feel that gave Star Wars it's success. In many ways, Star Wars has a lot of parallels to Halo, or maybe the other way around? Either way, if he undertook the project of making the Halo movie, it would be great because he also has massive experience in Sci-Fi movies, and the space scenes seen so often in Halo would be epic.

If BOTH worked together, it would be a dream come true.

It shouldn't just be 'MARINES SHOOTING ALIENS BOOOOOM!!!'
I think it should tell a very human story that captures the hope, fear and sadness of the characters during the Covenant invasion of a planet. Spartans could make a cameo appearance but IMO they wouldn't make brilliant film protagonists.
