I came for Halo, but I heard the Tru7h, fought thru Carnage, and stayed for Bungie.

Plenty of you will probably think I'm a crazy person, but I think the best place to start off a Halo film franchise is Contact Harvest. Before you pull out your torches and pitchforks, hear me out.

The problem all movies based on video games seem to have is mass appeal. If you make it too true to the source material, it many times wont appeal to general audiences, wont bring in enough money, and kind of defeats any studio's incentive to fund it. If you water it down for general audiences, you alienate your core fans.

Anyway, I like to think that we get the latter of those two options more often than not, and the movie just ends up sucking.

To be successful, a film adaptation has to be true enough to its source, and at the same time not make movie executives take their money and run for the hills. There has to be some sort of compromise.

In my opinion, Contact Harvest wouldn't need all that big of a compromise. The beauty of CH is that, while it does take place in the future, it doesn't drop you right into a world of genocidal alien collectives and generically-enhanced super soldiers. Contact Harvest puts you in the shoes of Avery Johnson; while he is later revealed to have undergone some augmentation during the ORION Project, it's not pivotal to CH's plot. Hell, I don't think it's even mentioned.

Anyway, the story starts off with this above average/elite solider who is being deployed fighting who? Terrorists! That's right, terrorists! Can modern audiences sympathize with that without a massive stretch of the imagination? Sure they can! The situation alone sets Johnson up to be a sympathetic character.

Contact Harvest eases the audience into the Halo Universe. It introduces those unfamiliar with Halo without overwhelming them. If successful, it would would likely allow sequels to explore the full depth of the plot without having to compromise as much.

I had to totally lol and agree with the Joss Whedon reply earlier.

Personally i think he is absolutely brilliant, He's got experience in Sci-fi as proved with the still ever-popular Firefly/Serenity.

Also he's directing The Avengers set to be released this year, and that looks completely bad-ass, So that will be proof of his work as an action director, Combine them and you got yourself a Halo movie.

Also, someone was saying about the actor for Chief, Well, in my eyes i imagined that it'd be a similar acting situation to Darth Vader, where one guy is in the armour, but another guy does the voice, because you never see the face, In which case Steve Downes could return as the role, giving Chief back his iconic voice.

Same could go for Cortana/Jen Taylor as the mo-cap/CGI would be shown as hologram form, So could easily fit her voice in there.

The only problem being is an appearance by Halsey or John without his armour (E.g Fall of Reach scenes where he is not wearing it)

@spawn031

"So much of what we do is ephemeral and quickly forgotten, even by ourselves, so it's gratifying to have something you have done linger in people's memories." John Williams

The director would be Peter Jackson. Sorry, I'm just on the whole parade with The Hobbit coming out this year ;D

Anyway, I think the plotline of Reach should be included to get the story off but keep the voices of the games. I think they're iconic to their character and if those are changed many people would be pretty upset.

This wrench in the engine, as you and someone else about two or three comments earlier believe, is a tremendous benefit to the storyline, in my humble opinion. Having the Master Chief unmasked in the movie will be an incredible point of interest to see the movie in the first place. That was my one problem with the games: Master Chief just didn't emotionally connect with the player. Having John as a young boy, growing into the armored juggernaut we're all familiar to is an essential part of the non-game Halo canon, and something the director should endeavor to include in the movie. Again, this is all simply MY opinion.

Describe what Marsellus Wallace looks like.
He-he's black.
Go on.
He's bald.
Does he look like a -blam!-?
What?
[shoots John in the shoulder; John screams] DOES...HE...LOOK...LIKE A...GRUNT?!
[in pain] No!
Then why'd you try to blam him like a grunt, John?

I think Hollywood needs a new Black actor. Seriously, I don't think there has been a new one in like ten years. Avery would be the perfect role for a new up and comer

George Lucas? Let's give Halo some of his prequel treatment.

lololol.

It shouldnt be, it would be crap and you know it. damn movie makers would probably turn it into a story like this

"a young aspiring rapper was in the hood when some government suits injected him with the newly tested "RAP JUICE KNOWN ONLY AS SPARTAN" and from then on he would be known as Master Chief of rapping.

His ghetto girl Cortana warned him of a gang known as The Covenant and they were trying to get him to rap against them so they could win and get accepted on the elite team of rappers named the Forerunners and go on the Great Journey world tour."

probably what would happen. I mean we all say Dragon Ball Evolution didnt we? I mean they basically did the same thing there.

Expressing my strong liberal views without shame. Favorite quotes below:

I agree with Primo on this. While I would love to see a Halo movie with Spartans who are being well acted and portrayed, it would ruin the incentive for the director to make a good film thereafter since it only appeals to us fans.

Contact Harvest could ease folks into the Universe - possibly even encourage them to investigate on their own - and then any other movie adaptations could be handled more true to the source material.

  • 01.19.2012 9:52 AM PDT

The production needs to be handled Apocalypse Now style. I can't imagine a Halo movie without tons of money being wasted and half the cast and crew gradually slipping into madness. Which is probably the real reason this movie has not been made;)

The one thing I still hold onto from the books though, that I think would be essential to the story, is the human side of the Spartans that Nylund explored in The Fall of Reach. It's hard to think of MC or any Spartan as being anything less than super human. So it is important to show the human cost and sacrifice of the Spartans, and their families, when they were ripped away from them at the age of five. Without showing the tragedy of their sacrifice, which they themselves never really consented to, and the necessity of it, the movie will most probably just be an okay sci-fi action movie based on a video game that far surpassed it in storytelling more than a decade before.

Without that emotional context that looks into the character of the Spartans there is only a sci-fi action movie that people who love the games will compulsorily feel the need to see.

I don't think it should be handled at all. I don't think it should expand anymore at all. We've got the games, the books, the toys, the well done Live action trailers before a game launch, and all kinds of other stuff.

Besides, I just can't think of anyone who could pull it off, and what would they make the movie about? I feel like, if the movie were to be any good, it would likely have to be something along the lines of a trilogy, aka LoToR movies.
They don't necessarily need to expand the story or the universe. They could do what Nolan did in The Dark Knight and just synthesize the source material, which seems to be what many comic book film adaptations were doing already anyway.

Aye, i don't particularly disagree on any point.

I just simply meant it'd be a problem, Because then they would need to hire an actor to play him, Which would be incredibly difficult to get right, You don't want someone too well known, You don't want someone who can't act it right, AND they need to look perfect for the part, Otherwise long-standing fans will just think "that's chief's face, LAME!".

That and matching it up with Steve Downes' voice (or not using it at all) would be a pain in the ass.

  • 01.19.2012 11:40 AM PDT

I really want J.J. Abrams to direct the movie adaptation. I think he can create something which is true to the franchise's roots, but introduce new and interesting things at the same time.

I think a CGI movie is the only way to make a decent Halo movie, like Halo Wars cutscenes or the CGI Resident Evil movies.
