Alright, this is to EVERYONE who keeps giving out the "It's not John" theories. Please let me make a few points that should show anyone with half of a chimpanzee's brain that it is the good old MC.
First off, common sense. Why in the hell would Bungie make a game with a different Spartan? Now I know, they're in the books, and yes, I have all 3 of them, but if you read just about anything in the game, it's apparent that Bungie intends for the games to be separate from the books, and that means keeping the illusion that MC is the last Spartan. In addition, I quote: "One ship, the Pillar of Autumn, escapes with the LAST SPARTAN-II and makes a blind jump into deep space." <- That is from the Halo 1 manuel, and it clearly states that in the game, there is only one Spartan. I know, I know, the books contradict that, but why on Earth would Bungie throw in more Spartans when thy've made it clear to the majority of gamers that MC is all that's left.
Next, everyone is saying, "OMG how is it teh chief, hes stil on teh forruner ship!!1!" Go to Gamespot.com. Read the behind the scenes Bungie interview. It CLEARLY states that the segment in the trailer is from roughly 1/3 through the game. Don't believe me?

Go to the link, under the first update it says exactly what I have mentioned.
It's also worth mentioning, the article refers the the character as Master Chief numerous times.
Another point I keep hearing is how the trailer Sparatn's gloves are different, and in First Strike, Fred had his gloves replaced with MKV MJOLNIR components. One more time: MKV. Mark 5. In Halo 2, MC has MKVI. Now if Fred got to Earth, wouldn't they give him new MKVI or higher armor? so in theory, the cooler, shinier, more advanced armor COULD be the MKV that Fred gets, but it seems much, much more likely it's MKVII or higher, which MC could probably get his hands on after returning from the Forerunner ship.
Finally, why would Bungie do this? What do they have to gain? Sure, they added the Arbiter in Halo 2, but that was to help move along the Covenant civil war and give a more emotional side to the Covenant. How would haveing some random other Spartan, who's appeared in no other games, and who wouldn't be recognized by anyone apart from hardcore Halo book fans, help make this game great? I sure can't think of anything.
In addtion, I'd like to mention the Assault Rifle for for moment.
It looks near identical to the AR (with the exception of a few very tiny visual tweaks and a lightly longer barrel). And yet, because of these seriously miniscule changes, people instantly think it can't possibly be an AR of any sort.
The Sniper in Halo 2 has a rounded scope, in Halo 1 it was squared. Is it still the good ole Sniper? Better believe it.
I'll bet you a weeks paycheck to a crusy bagel that that gun is either the MA5B with a few tweaks, or the smaller MA2B from the books. And it's in the freakin' announcement trailer, so it could very well be removed by the time the game is released.
EDIT:
Desert = sand and dust.
Sand and dust = makes stuff look brown.
Spartan's armor = brownish.
Spartan = In desert.
I rest my case.
