I've been looking over some topics that suggest that the New Mombassa bridge is the devistated object in the background, but it would appear that the evidence points otherwise. If you'll recall, New Mombassa is located on the ocean and the bridge you cross is hovering over a large body of water. How could there be a seemingly dry African plain, complete with trees and brush that take years to grow, right in close proximity to the New Mombassa bridge. This is some other object. What it points to, I don't know.
It is hinted by Cortana early in Halo 2 that the Ark is located close to New Mombassa because Regret specifically chose that loaction to land, but the question still begs to differ, how could that be New Mombassa's bridge in the background when the environment definetly indicates otherwise.

But explain how those fully grown trees got there. This however brings up an intertesting point. The indicators point to New Mombassa (bridge, street sign) but yet others don't (tree and brush). Could this be a time in the future. Think about it. How could there be a huge valley in Africa that just sat there in plain sight without anybody noticing it. Maybe this is a future situation in which the Covenant have spent years excavating the structure and it is just now being unearthed.

The object in the background IS the New Mombasa Space Elevator. It has been stated by Bungie themselves. If you look at it yourself you'll see that it is like a tube with circular rings around it. Go play Halo 2 for a moment and you'll see that the Space Elevator is a Big-Ass-Tube with rings around it.

The brigde is significantly far away in the trailer. A couple of trees and bushes are possible to have grown somewhere around New Mombassa. Also, you will notice that the "bridge" appears to be in some sort of lower ground. Something that would occur after a river dried up. I still think that the object in the backround is the New Mombassa bridge.

Damn just wait for the game to come out and you will see, plus it's just a trailer, a little trailer that has almost nothing you can tell about the new game.
