You're missing a significant milestone in there...
Bungie.net was the name of the Myth "metaserver" that allowed for multiplayer gaming and chat in Myth online play. The website companion of it was created for Myth 2 in 1997. That website was retired and the Halo-era site (with the fanclub chapters) launched on November 15th, 2001. This site was radically overhauled both visually and in the base code (as in, we threw out the old code completely) in April 2004, to ready ourselves for the onslaught of Halo 2. Bungie.net's basic systems have been iterated on significantly since then, but it is still recognizable as that 2004 site from a code point of view.

re-launched? lolwut? Pretty sure they didn't get disbanded at all in between CE and Halo 2...
I'm just quoting it straight from the book, and it says "relaunched".
I distinctly remember skipping a class or two in college to go surf B.Net for a few hours aimlessly, right around the launch of Halo 2 way back in '04. That's when the background was all blue, and being able to see your Halo 2 medals was like the greatest thing since sliced bread! Ahh...the good ole' days.
