To follow the rules is conducive to being a good person. I enjoy being a good person; so I follow them. It's really that simple. If there were no rules, would you still be able to be a good person? I follow my own morals, not necessarily the rules of the site. Sometimes this gets me into trouble, but often it does not.My own moral code leads me to follow the rules. It allows places like this to function which gives me a sense of satisfaction. If there were no rules then this place would inevitably fall apart. What I'm trying to say is that structure gives me utility; with that comes satisfaction. I am a cog in a larger machine, a member of a community. That alone is what drives me to follow the rules.
Internet communities are extremely similar to the communities you interact with every day. Friends, family, work; these are all communities with their own codes and rules. To thrive in such communities one must abide by them.
Additionally, opposing "rules" are of equal importance. this drives "rule followers" to further progress. So I suppose rule breakers are important as well. To those who break the rules, I thank you for being my wisest teacher. W/o you I would be nothing.
I'm not sure I can answer your question. W/o rules, culture and moral codes there would be no distinction between good and evil. With that there would be no foundation for humanity to thrive; to become the "superpower" of all living creatures on this planet. The fact that this discussion is taking place points to the importance of "rules" in the evolution of man and the human experience.
