So... We all know what Cortana said, but let's think about it for a second...

Since when does Cortana speak in such poetic diction and ambiguities?
She always speaks in technical, straight-to-the-point terms. (What else would an AI speak in?)

Who's the only alien we know that speaks like that?

Just more proof of what we knew already.

Even when Cortana sounds like herself, she is still speaking with the same kind of diction.

The only possible explanation is that none of the words come from Cortana, but from Gravemind. Every word is his.

Just my two cents...

in the books cortans duplicate in the third triligy breakdown because a ai's life span is a few years 5 years is norm i think, cortana was a special ai so she had shortan life span and all the data from halo she still had so that shortened her life span

but that is another possibility that gravemind is controling cortana

i thought it was common knowledge that it was gravemind who was speaking... i mean, come on, you can hear him VERY clearly in the "gods and demons" line. im starting to tire of repeat threads...

well, if you had read the books, you would know that she is breaking down, basically going crazy. another idea is that they are communicating across hundreds of lightyears of space, which might break up the transmission quite a bit.

No, the point is that the whole sequence is his words, and that at no point (even when you think Cortana is healthy and speaking clearly with no underlying Gravemind voice) is Cortana speaking herself.

She has to be merely a puppet. Therefore she is more than likely NOT rampant.

Uh... Halo2sucks.com is really no longer concerned with halo 2, me being an avid member. We are now most active in discussing halo 3 much like you guys.

Man, will the day ever come when Halo2sucks and Bungie get along? I think it has come, not sure about the stereotypes here though.

While I agree that Gravemind is controlling Cortana to some extent (those lower harmonics in the first bit are pretty unmistakable), the second bit seems like something she'd say. As I'm sure we all know, "Cortana" is the name of a famous sword, made by a swordsmith who also made a blade called "Durandal." The bit about Cortana being the Chief's sword seems like too much of a connection for the seemingly sword-happy Bungie story writers to ignore.
As for the Gods and Demons, that would seem to refer to the Forerunner and the Chief respectively, if it refers to anybody in particular.

Of course Gravemind is controlling her. Bungie already said that.... "The Master Chief's AI companion Cortana is still trapped in the clutches of the Gravemind--a horrifying Flood intelligence, and a civil war is raging in the heart of the Covenant,"

Sorry, but you still don't get it...
There is still a discrepancy about whether the word was "sword" or "source". But either way, Cortana would never speak in that kind of tone (not voice tone, but writing tone). It fits Gravemind's tone perfectly, however.

Thank you AP Language and Composition!

Never Give Up Without A Fight

The Hushed Casket

Another way we know its not Cortana speaking is when she says "i have defied gods and demons", the only demon we know about is yours truely MC. Cortana must be being overshadowed by Gravemind.

Oooooooooh.... I didn't read that.
Well it's on the about page of Halo 3, so that's a confirmation.
Which means, again, that she is NOT RAMPANT, but just a puppet.

I'll continue my theory (fact) further by saying that since Cortana is currently being controlled by Gravemind, it would be a great plot choice if Cortana could somehow break free from Gravemind via Sargent Johnson or possibly her own free will. That would craete suspense until she finally breaks free and then helps MC go into the Ark and destroy all the Halos (whoops that's another one of my theories, excuse me).

Wait. I think I just found something big. Cortana's speech may be in iambic septameter, or seven iams per verse.

I have defied gods and demons. - Eight syllables

I am your shield. I am your sword. - Eight syllables

I know you. Your past. Your future. - Eight syllables

This is the way the world ends. - Seven syllables

Now I know this isn't all seven syllables, but I am not too clear on the rythm in poetry. I remember at least one gravemind quote had eight, but somewhere two syllables counted as one. If someone could help me out here, I think I just found something very important.

just to clear up an earlier reply an AIs life span is around seven years then they get too smart and think themselves to death.

Cortana spoke like this before in the Cortana Letters, and the rhyme is important because it is consistent in Bungies fixation with the number seven (the last line has seven syllables, as the above poster already said).

Cortana speaking in prose and ambiguities is the LAST reason I would believe this to be just Graveminds words.

The Cortana Letters also tried to build up the same kind of hype, I see no reason that Cortana could not adopt the same manner of speaking again when she is trying to hype us up for Halo 3.

Well it doesnt make sence that she can see the MCs future herself, but Gravemind did tell the MC and the Arbitor about there future in H2, he can see it...she shouldnt be able to. Maybe he told her what was going to happen. Maybe she already knows, (I think shes known since Halo:ce when she was pluged into Halo for the first time)

Plus it sounds like gravemind is ekoing what Cortona says in the trailer. Deffinetly conected.

Well...
There could be several resons/theories that Cortana is speaking like this.

1. Cortana has been overshadowed by Gravemind and has become corupted, howelse would she get into the desert plains? Something had to be controlling the Cheif's armor from outside of it, which Cortana can not do. So who or what generated the image? Most possibly Gravemind.

2. Cortana is coming close to her final stages of life, and is not 'thinking' clearly snce AIs think themself to , as mentioned in The Fall of Reach. She may be overshadowed by Gravemind, but it's not an absolute for the final game, is it? (I better do more reserch on that...)

3. Gravemind and Cortana may have become one. Strange I know, but it may be true, anyways this was just a crazy theory.

4. What everybody else said. No AI corruption and Gravemind has pure control over her.

But that doesn't answer this one not-so-simple question:
How did Cortana get out onto the desert plains without a holo-transmmitter!? Or, if it was by using an external holo-emmiting unit on the cheif's suit, how did Cortana use it if she's half-way across the galaxy?

I dont think she is actualy there...the MC cant see her, or hear her, she's just ment for us to see and hear I think.

I think she will be cut from the scean there. Remember how the first videos we got of H2 he was walking threw the doors before getting sucked outa the ship...and in the game, he was dragging the covie bomb. It will be one of those deals. I think she was just added there for our own entertainment.

I am pretty sure it is "sword" because it says "I am your shield. I am your sword". It wouldn't say "I am your shield. I am your source". Swords go with Shields

If you listen closely it sounds like two voices overlapingeach other so it sounds like source. What just listen to part and it almost sounds like cortana say's it in two different tones.

I go by many names, Shinigami, osiris, thanatos, Ares are but a few. But my name is not important for i am god and i am coming for you.

i am a master of my trade with these two hands i create great works. What is it i do?? ... well lets hope for your sake you never find out.

Like guns?? so do we, join Halo Armory and you can too

it could be that the gravemid is somehow utilising her or it could be that since she is an A.I directly based on a persons mind and has the power of multiple normal AI's that she is reaching the end of her working life. or it could be that she is bored and wants to mess with the chiefs mind from the other side of the galaxy :P
