Firstoff, i haven't read the halo bookss yet so if this is in there somewhere forgive my ranting.
In Halo 2, the first time we saw gravemind he had caught master chief after falling into the water after regret, and had said something like "this is not your grave but you are welcome". Later he is the one that tells MC and the arbiter that they have to work together to stop what is happening. But if he was going to take over cortanas mainframe and end up being a villian, why would he have made an alliance of 2 of the best fighters in the galaxy and their followers to fight against. Maybe there is more power with the brutes than anyone had previously thought. Maybe Gravemind would end up being a matyr, to end the war at hand. So how does anyone really know if Gravemind is trying to hurt or help?

the gravemind didnt want to be friends. he was going to get something BIG out of helping MC and the arbiter to stop the rings from activating: the survival of the flood. if the rings activate, the flood's food will die, and soon after the flood themselves. he befriended them in order to ensure the flood's survival, nothing more.

funnily enough i never even pictured gravemind as a flood before i feel like an idiot now... but as you said he wouldnt want the rings to go off because it would kill off the flood, so why possess cortana and piss of MC, what information could she have that he doesnt already have?

What does every other creature known to man ultimately have in mind? Survival. Thats what Gravemind is doing, he is pulling the strings of his puppets in order to survive. 'Cept no one gets away with pulling the Chiefs strings for too long...
