Sword block; do you think it's a logical mechanic?

I've seen numerous arguments one way or the other, but generally they boil down to one of two basic concepts.

1) Plasma is so hot it would vaporize anything in it's path. Attempting to block would simply cause your arm to be vaporized first.

2) Mjolnir armor can withstand plasma to an extent - otherwise plasma pistols would be one-shot kills. Blocking a sword lunge leaves the armor severly damaged, but focuses the damage on one area (either the arm itself, or the shield system)

So what do you think? Does it make sense?

Life is a journey, if you spend all of it with your nose in your map, you may miss some of the best parts.

If Spartan IIs couldn't do it, how could Spartan IIIs?

This. Spartan IIs were the real deal. Stronger armor and shields. Spartan IIIs were supposed to be cheap super soldiers that can be put on the front lines.

I liked the sword block. It made the sword take skill instead of crouching around with a 1 shot kill weapon.
Sword block balanced the sword.

lolno. It's a power weapon for a reason. It's like blocking a Rocket with AL. It's nullifying the reason why it's a power weapon.

Hey, uh, if you like vs threads, then check out this little group right here, if you have the time. It's pretty fun, just hop right in.

I've always thought it was the shield deflecting the strike...or maybe it's the fact that it's a video game and logic doesn't apply here. This is a franchise with supersoldiers, aliens, zombies, insane robots, galaxy-wide WMD's, eldritch abominations and faster-than-light travel, after all.

I hate pointing things out but its energy, not plasma that's why it should be one strike kill

The 343 forums suck. They're full of retarded kids and mods who got butthurt in the B.net forums for being told that they're bad.

Your two basic arguments are realism, and realism?

How about the fact that it's terribly inconsistent? Or that it negates the "power" status in the term "power weapon"? Or that it's yet another crutch for bad kids?

A steel shield can block a steel sword. Energy shields can block energy swords.

And yes, it is indeed plasma. Same with your shields.

"Energy" doesn't have a mass.

IT ISN'T THE REALISM OR THE PHYSICS BEHIND THE MECHANISM THAT PEOPLE DISLIKE ABOUT IT, IT'S THE RETARDED GAMEPLAY THAT IT BRINGS!

Goddamn.

I think it ought to have stayed (making sense or not) since it keeps sword spirnters under control usually

Well then, Waypoint fails too.

"It's fiction" only goes so far.

For example. In mw2 you jump over 70 meters with a snowbike. is that realism? No! so i dont see how you can blame Halo for making a weapon that can sharpen energy.

  • 01.05.2012 4:17 PM PDT

Sword block does make a lot of sense since there is Sprint+sword. It is still annyoing as hell.

In my opinion they should just remove sprint and any AAs in every playlist so they can remove sword block as well. But that won't happen.

Bending the laws of physics for entertainment value is one thing. Gameplay =/= canon.

Halo is a fictional future setting. It takes place in our world. We're to assume it works as it does in real life. Thus, energy cannot be sharpened. At all. If you want proof, go light a fire and try to sharpen the flames, because it's the same basic principle.

Okay so first off,

This should straighten things out. It's an energy sword by name, but the blade is composed of plasma.

And secondly, Posted by: B Rye
Consistency is heavily affected by network conditions. As much as a developer should accommodate real life situations, you can't expect a developer to make every game they produce turn based to account for the seven kids connecting to live with 33.6 kbps modems.
In terms of being a 'crutch' - that's getting really tired. I understand that the only 'skill' you'll respect is being able to manipulate your reticule, but following that logic through reduces all of MM to H3 Swat. H3 Swat was awesome - no argument, but it's nice to have some variety to gameplay. Once you're done figuring out who's the best at quick-scoping it's nice to have something else to do.
(And the arguments are both concerning realism because this thread is about the perceived realism. I only mention in-game inclusion for clarity's sake)
