I understand what everyone is saying, what I'm actually confused about is why all these gymnastics are really necessary in the first place.

Here's a example, I just went on my profile and downloaded this image.

Now couldn't that just be displayed in place of my current avatar?

I mean, it's a simple PNG image, I don't foresee any real problems with it.
Well, the upload creates a new image for every user by overlaying several images. Although this is also done with the emblem avatars, so I'm not sure why this is a limitation...

Emblems aren't exactly as detailed as armor pieces.
We're talking about images here. It's not that much of a difference in that perspective.

I mean, we're literally talking maybe a 2 KB difference...

If you were a moderator or employee, you'd be able to upload your own avatar, otherwise. No.
But that image is already on the site, it would just have to be assigned to my profile (which it already is) and then set as my avatar.

WTF are you talking about?
The url you posted is

http://i.imgur.com/anIdr.png

imgur.com =/= bungie.net
I don't see why you're so confused.
You linked yours earlier.

I just wasn't sure how to get to the page so I downloaded the image and put it on imgur.

You're right, I linked to mine, and what I linked to was the image stored on Bungie.net. Not on imgur. Showing that a simple parameter in the URL doesn't change the armor like it did with the HALO 3 Models.

So you're suggesting pngs being downloaded daily for every user using a Halo Reach Model?

Who the hell do you think I am?

So apparently you can't, but it would still be pretty cool.

Citizens of Me! The cruelty of the old Pharaoh is a thing of the past. Let a whole new wave of cruelty wash over this lazy land.

Hear the word of Pharaoh. Build unto me a statue of ridiculous proportion. One billion cubits in height......that I might be remembered for all eternity!

And be quick about it!

1. Download coup
2. Take screen of Reach model
3. Edit it up to look badass
4. Add it to coup
5. ???
6. Profit!
The problem with that is that coup gives me such a big head ache. So many people use such bright, flashy, contrasting colors that trying to read becomes a nightmare.

Just ignore the bad ones, or if you're to lazy for that, ignore all. That way people see your coup, and you see your coup. Everybody wins!
I used to use Coup way back when it was just the avatars and title bars, but now people have all those ugly DBZ backgrounds and ugly eyesore colors.

You can only ignore so much...

You can ignore all.

Achronos said it's now possible, but it would be pointless as they're not adding any new Reach related features to the site.

That makes it slow though, and sometimes it doesn't ignore certain things...

Count how many possible variations of Reach avatars there are. Then scale that with the number of potential users.

Add in the strain of the forums would put on the avatar renderer, and it just isn't worth it.
What if the avatar were cached so it's only ever generated once?

There comes a time in every mans life... and that time is not now.

But we are allowed the our emblems from 4 games? There are plenty of variations there as well (emblem, background, 2 emblem colours plus the background colour), many of which don't appear in multiple games. I don't see how that can be so much easier to do, especially if you only render the top half of the player model like you do with the Halo 3 player model avatars.

Our destiny is not frightful because it is unreal, it is frightful because it is irreversible and iron-clad. Time is the substance I am made of. Time is a river which sweeps me along, but I am the river. It is a tiger which destroys me, but I am the tiger. It is a fire which consumes me, but I am the fire.

Models > Emblems

Please, elaborate. They are both taken from the game, they should be the same resolution. Please explain to me how models are greater than emblems.
