I already put this in teh Underground like months ago and I can't find it so here it is... (I saved the text cuz it sounds cool)

It is possible that you could play as any character model in the game. Many beleive it would make the game unbalanced. No. If done properly and enough time is put in it would be a high possibility.

DIALOGUE:
Speech is a main problem. Simply make it so when say take an elite, if you put your aim on something red and you havn't encountered any other enemies for 40 seconds the elite will say "Enemy!" or that thing from Halo 1: "AAARRGGH! WOOBOBAH!" this way Multiplayer doesn't feel as fake. Like in Halo1 movements done by characters looked un-co but in Halo2 it makes the game look way better because they are more realistically coordinated. That can be applied to dialogue. Also if you are shot you would make the moan noises or if you defeat an enemy you would say something. This makes Multiplayer seem more alive and would be a great edition, especialy needed if more character models are to be added.

SHEILDS:
This is one of the main delemas. Though it could easily be solved. Lets take a grunt. Now make hes shield and health capacity the same as the elite and spartan models. If you simply replace the shield effect with blood it would be solved, for instance, when you shoot something it will simply make a shield effect and sound. But if you replace that with blood its ok. The bar can then represent not shields for the grunt but would represent endurance. If you take an overshield then it would be an endurance boost for a grunt but for say a spartan it would be a shield boost. Just remove the shield effect. As for jackal barrier shields, simply turn them into a dual wieldable weapon. Sniper jackals don't use shields in campagn so why in Multiplayer? To put the shield infront of you crouch. The shoot button will activate, deactive the shield so it can be used to trick the enemy of an easy target, but then a shield is produced and the enemy are tricked. There are many strategic advantages.

ACTIONS:
Take a grunt. How will we make it melee? Easy! Grunts have a melee attack action. Want to see it? Play on that level before the one with the sputnik skull. Get a grunt, keep it alive and destroy those holes were the sentinels come out of. Kick one of the peices from the sentinal hole in the way of a grunt and move so it will follow you. Now when the peice gets in the way the grunt will smash it. They also do this with some broken banshee bits and other debris. Simply put this actoin in for the melee attack for grunts. If for say a jackal that has no melee animation, make one.

WEAPONS:
Certain characters are limited to use certain weapons. This is not so in the freedom of multiplayer. Let a jackal hold a battlerifle, a brute hold a fuel rod, a hunter hold a magnum, a grunt hold a carbine. And as for those issues with grenades, make grenades usable for jackals and hunters that never use them. theres no limits here, No way!

EXTRA:
It would be fun if in multiplayer there was those flood canisters found on that elivator on one of those arbiter levels. Maybe they can contain flood. Or if you head to the factory maybe even you can ride in them and be sent to ambush the enemyusing them. This is a pretty lame idea in theory, but in practice it would probably work if you imagine it how bungie would do it.

This will very likely in practice let alone theory but there could be some way to recreate the way brutes get angree and charge or how elites get fisty and how grunts run. If you took enough damage you would become 100% resistant to the sting effect (example, getting shot and clutching stomach or getting pushed back or slowed down) and you drop all your weapons. You could reaquire them if you go up to them and press X if you like. When in this mode you become faster and your melees are stronger. However this afect wares off when your shields recharge and your health capacity is automaticaly replenished.

A good idea is if enemies had explosve or normal weakpoints. It would work. Grunts methane tanks are an explosive weak point and their lower stomch a non explosive one, Spartans back plate explosive and exposed black fabric between peices of armour on lower stomch, Jackals electronic shield arm attachment and their feet, Brutes blue orb on chain on body and ill protected back, elites shield generators and lower stomach and hunters exposed skin and electronic hand fuel rod attachment could be their weakness. Plus humans ill protected back. It would also be fun to see grenades on the belts of enemies so they could be shot resaulting in an explosion if shot enough. This suggestion has proven very succesful in theory.

This would work quite well, but if you could shoot off armour... This wouldn't go for everything. For instance some armour would still be left on. To hide things like Master Cheifs true appearance. It would work like shooting sentinals apart. Once shields or endurance is down brest plates, head protectors, back armour, shin guards, arm guards ect. could be shot off to a certain degree. This would be a great edition especialy if you had a rocket launcher it would add a realistic flare to the game. Also if you didn't do enough for on something to rip it off then just make armour decals like bullet / scratch marks.

I applaud your efforts to explain your idea, but character models with different sizes, attributes, and abilities, would completely -blam!- all over Halo's multiplayer as we know it.

But, Bungie always have a solution, I reckon these are some of the things they will do, in the end it will probably work out, I mainly did this because I have a secret obsession...

... The Grunts! OHH! SO CUTE! I want to play as one!

i can only realistically see brutes as a new skin, just because they're the closest in size and shape to the spartans and elites. (and if you're doing enough damage to knock off the armor, you're doing enough damage to penetrate, killing your foe.)
