There is a reason I am user ID 1 and my account creation date is before this site came online.
One of the biggest problems in my opinion with playing Halo2 on XBL is the amount of people that constantly quit out of games. It is getting to such a point where I don't think I can think of a game recently that has actually finished with both teams having all of their original players. Now I'm not a big fan of quiters to begin with, so I'll get that bias out of the way up front, but it seems that the vast amount of people are ruining the experience of playing online for everyone else. This problem is only exaserbated by the "host" issue. Now I understand why Halo2 had to use this setup to run XBL, I don't really like it, but I understand it. But it sucks for players to have to spend more time in the "blue screen of death" while the game picks another host because the host just quit out. I wanted to conduct a little experiment the last time I played to see if I was just being over-sensitive to the issue. During a 4 hour period, 2 hours was spent playing ranked and 2 hours was spent playing unranked, I spent the following: In the ranked gametypes (Team Slayer) during the 2 hours, a total of 22 people quit out of the games, and I spent a whopping 24 minutes in the "blue screen of death". It only got worse during the unranked games (Team Training) . During the 2 hours I played, 38 people quit out of games, and I spent almost a half hour in the "BSOD". It was literally almost every game I played someone quit out, and the vast vast majority the game when to the "BSOD".
Now that I got the empirical information out of the way, here is what I am suggesting. I know that with the 360's reputation system, you get a bad reputation if you quit out of games repeatedly. That's fine, that's a step in the right direction. But I really think that Bungie should take out the "Leave Game" option out of the start menu. I think it is just far too easy to quit out of a game, and screw over the rest of the people that are playing the game along with you. Plus, if you quit out of a game currently, there is no negative effect that happens to you. Granted, you might go down a rank, but that rarely ever happens. And still, ranks have no meaning, Bungie has said it themselves several times. Plus, if you are the host and you quit out, the remaining people are forced to endure the "BSOD" and that just gives them the perfect oppertunity to show how ignorant they truely are by shouting obsenities and racial slurs to everyone within earshot during the time out of the game.
Now I also conceed that there are certain times that you truely need to leave a game and go take care of something. Like the Pizza Man finally showed up to give you that pizza you ordered an hour ago, but they said it would be 20 minutes. (Lying Bastards!!) Or something more serious, like if you have kids, and one of them gets hurt while you were ignoring them playing with the oven so you could get your Halo fix in. That stuff I understand. But in reality, if that stuff is happening, wouldn't you be taking a break from playing for a few minutes or longer. Wouldn't you naturally be turning your xbox off because you have to go take care of something?? In my opinion, if you want to quit out of a game, you should be forced to turn your xbox off and then turn it back on. At least then, you have to go through all the trouble of booting it back up, logging back in, and then getting into another game. I think that doing that 1 step alone would greatly reduce the amount of people that quit out of games. If they had to spend 5 minutes waiting to load everything back up, they would be far less likely to quit out of a game, especially if there were only a little bit of time left to play anyways.
In conclusion, I understand that when Halo3 comes out on the 360, the reputation system will help because since I have a 5 star rating, the chances of me playing against people that constantly quit out is going to be lessened. But, I still feel that having the "leave game" option is making it too easy for people to quit out, and ruining the experience for a lot of people.
Just my opinion, and thanks for reading a long long post.
See you online, I promise I won't quit out on you ;)
