Forget it man, and get with the countdown. Shake this square world and blast off for Kicksville.
Reach host ranking algorithm: (a*quit_percentage + b*isMexican + c*(1/KDR) + d*hasGuest) * 100
where a > b = d > c

A good -better than average- kill to death rate would obviously be above one, because one is the average of all kill death rates (excluding suicides, which would probably make the average kill death rate somewhere below one, but only further reinforce that anything above one is a good kill to death rate).
You know we're just talking about the DMR, not your overall K/D, right?
At any rate, the average K/D ratio is certainly higher than one. Guests generally go disproportionately negative, but their ratio is not recorded in the population, so they serve to pad the K/D of other accounts.
Mathematically the average K/D ratio need not equal one, either. Spread must be zero (notwithstanding suicides, as you mentioned, which will make the global spread negative), but the average ratio can easily be skewed. As an extreme example, imagine a 1v1 where the winner goes 15 for 3. Spread is zero (+12 + -12 = 0), but the ratios are 5.00 vs 0.2 (rounded). The average K/D here is 2.6. Players doing well weight the average more than players doing poorly. I don't know what the average K/D ratio is, but I'd hazard a guess it's around 1.2 or so.
As a slightly more indepth example, you can examine any game in your game history. Here is the last game I played. The average K/D ratio in that game was 1.78 (assuming I did the math right).
