Subject: Ban the discussion of suicide?

Just a genuine inquiry. These always just spark outright nasty and offensive debates that have no place on this forum.

Anyone agree?

Please excuse if its already against the rules but every thread regarding the topic I have ever seen has never been locked, the one currently on the flood is the only exception.

The problem here is that the topic itself isn't necessarily bad, people just come in and cause conflict. Granted that could be said about religious/political threads but I think its slightly different. Personally, if I was a mod the moment I saw a thread like that I would post something telling people to watch their step and continue to heavily monitor the thread. Bans/warnings would be handed out to the individuals that intentionally cause conflict.

Don't feel like creating another post already:

It usually isn't a thought provoking topic

I'd disagree. You will find that people's personal beliefs in regards to suicide vary greatly. Even when not trying to troll, some belief sets are controversial and can start heated debates. It's at this point where the thread digresses and it becomes simply flaming.

Citizens of Me! The cruelty of the old Pharaoh is a thing of the past. Let a whole new wave of cruelty wash over this lazy land.

Hear the word of Pharaoh. Build unto me a statue of ridiculous proportion. One billion cubits in height......that I might be remembered for all eternity!

And be quick about it!

Possibly. It usually isn't a thought provoking topic, just trolls saying 'do it bro, you're scum, the world doesn't want you'

No need to have that now really.

Spread the love...

I think they should be banned. The entire topic is pretty much an invitation to rule-breaking.

Isn't suicidal part of religion belief? If so, it's strictly against the rules.

Certain religions have beliefs pertaining to suicide, but that doesn't make it fall under the domain of a religious discussion; unless of course you were discussing the religious implications of suicide.

If it's purely socially based, and it's a reporting of a news story, I don't see it being bannable/lockable.

But if politics, religion, someone talking about committing suicide, or someone advocating suicide comes into play there, it's absolutely not allowed.

  • 01.06.2012 10:43 PM PDT

This, although discussion of suicide often goes hand-in-hand with religious discussion. I don't really see that as a cause to immediately lock it, however; simply a reason to monitor it closely.

I suspect llamas are secretly wizards. I <3 poptarts n' milk. I like me. Grimick is defined as: a logical parodox, the act of funnaling a potato down your throat, and a deliciously flavored muffin (with pecons and blueberries). Norway is the Swedish word for 'moron'. My sister has cancer, so i get to use handicap parking and cut small children in line at Disneyland.

"Don't eat doughnuts on thin ice."

"The pancake, my friend, has officially been flipped."

I think it would be better to stay away from it. Its one of those grey areas that I would regret going into.

That's one of the dumbest things I've read in a while. It honestly, seriously, undoubtedly is.

I suppose we should also just go ahead and ban the following?
-MLP Discussion
-Bullying
-Cyber Bullying
-Justin Bieber
-Mac vs PC
-Console choices
-Shooter preferences
-Rap Music
-Smexual Orientation/Legislation regarding it
-Veganism/Vegetarianism
-Threads addressing culture

Wouldn't an ever-expanding list like that make the rules look nice and pretty?

EDIT: Maybe I should make myself clear. Banning individual topics is a bad idea.

Now, in the quantum moment before the closure, when all become one. One moment left. One point of space and time.

I know who you are.

You are Destiny.

How so? I don't see how someone discussing suicide is "rule-breaking." Perhaps when one is intending to do it to themselves, then that may be true (likely they're not serious); but if it's just discussion on the topic, there really isn't anything wrong with it.

Honestly, if discussions surrounding suicide is causing people to act like 12-year-olds on the Internet, then the moderators shouldn't ban the topic, they should just simply remove those who can't play nice. It's as simple as that.

I'm okay with this

I think it should be banned because it almost always leads to discussions of hatred, religion, or social issues which we all know leads to arguments and butthurt 12 year olds thinking they know what they are talking about when in reality they have probably never had to go through the issues during and after the events of suicide in real life.

Actually, I'm gonna have to play your card here and say that this is one of the dumbest things I've read in a while. It honestly, seriously, undoubtedly is.

However, no, I don't think it should be banned in its entirety; only the usual rules, e.g., don't talk about religious aspects, etc. should be enforced.

If 100 people post threads in the flood talking about how they are thinking about killing themselves most of them are probably joking. Even if 99 of them are making the thread for a cheap laugh that means there is one person who is considering taking their own life. For this person it would be wrong to assume that they are just a troll and banning them as such. This is why I think that suicide threads should not be banned as a group, and that if I ever see one I will tell the person to get help, even if it probably is a troll.

The other threads about suicide, as long as they don't break any other rules are fine, if even though some people may misbehave.
