Subject: Suicide in MM

Hello. Reach is the first Halo game I have played and my style is mostly recreational.

Why is there a 10 second respawn delay for a suicide? In fact, why is there even a score negation for it?

Designer's logic: "Oh look that kid walked off a ledge. Their team is now 1 player short. LET'S KEEP THE TEAM (AND HIM)WAITING FOR LONGER"

For one, if you suicide and have to wait 5 seconds it is already delaying a potential kill opportunity. It doesn't make sense to take away from the score.

This could eliminate griefers who jump off ledges to delay the game on purpose if there was no score negation.

Someone explain why a self-kill is punished equally as a team-kill?

it doesnt really matter. just dont jump off the map. its hard to actually get a betrayal

You want a sandwich? Sure. As long as you don't mind me putting poison in it.

Yeah. I use the AR, so what? All you can do is scream and rage about me using the weapon.

Because you're part of the team and, no matter what way you look at it, committing suicide has the same outcome of you betraying a teammate ... More or less.

"I'm across the map from my team and there are multiple enemies coming towards me. Let me kill myself for no score or respawn penalty to stop the other team from getting an assured kill."

It is to stop "tactical suicides".

"Tactical suicides" are already prevented because if there's any damage done to you (which there must be if there are multiple hostiles heading at you) you jumping off/getting betrayed still counts as a kill for the other team.

No, I'm talking about the type where you underestimate a gap and end up falling through (this happens a LOT on Pinnacle). To me getting punished for that is just stupid.

You shouldn't have misjudged the distance then. Or perhaps you should actually look before you jump?

Or perhaps they could just remove the suicide penalty and change it to "killed by the Guardians" or something

My problems [with Reach] are basically just full parties, mlg, and people who go out of their way not to get killed.

Just don't jump off the map. Problem solved.

I'm afraid it's not that simple. Especially on The Cage in Infection the suicide issue is especially severe. There's little to no control over the Evade and next thing you know you're gone.

Don't Evade up a ramp. Problem solved.
You would think that, having done it that past who knows how many times, you would learn not to do it.

There is more to that in committing tactical suicide. Imagine this situation, You are winning 3-2 against a very competitive team and they just took map control. You anticipate losing the lead soon. What do you do?

Commit suicide over and over again off respawn so that they never find you because you are always looking at the respawn screen. Game ends 3-2. You win. Tell me how that is fun?

It's a penalty for causing your team to have one less player. It will make the person committing suicide not want to because it takes away from the team's points. But if they are doing it on purpose, then it will take them longer to respawn so that they cannot do it as many times in one match. But if you commit suicide only once, a ten-second penalty should not be that much of an issue.

Life is a journey, if you spend all of it with your nose in your map, you may miss some of the best parts.

Solution:

Don't commit suicide.

It gives you time to think what you did wrong to commit suicide and not do it again.

Tell me about it. If there was no ten second delay, I could finally get past -60 on -blam!- maps.

Reality is broken.

Also, you're not your stats.

/facepalm

Because now you can't abuse killing someone as you're falling off the map.

But when I get knocked off the map by an enemy grenade I should not lose a kill for that. IMO.

If a good team took map control, you'll probably end up getting spawn killed. I'd rather make the game annoying for them.

I agree, it would be easier for me to cost my team the game if I was able to suicide faster.

  • 01.09.2012 9:40 PM PDT

I agree with punishing players for suicides. I won a ranked game of Doubles in the early days of Halo 3 1v2 against two Brigaderps by gaining a small lead, and spending the rest of the time hiding and committing suicide when they were close to me on the radar. Bungie thought removing the suicide penalty would prevent griefers from committing a bunch of suicides and guaranteeing that team's loss, but removing the penalty has even more unfair implications.
