Elitism

Where did it start? How did it begin? Surely there has to be some explanation as to where all this "title hoarding" took place. Was it the initial placement of these on our account? Just because someone says something, we automatically assume it's that way because of the color of their bar.

It's sad how some people literally go through these forums and won't even notice or respond to other users posts simply because of their color. I think it degrades from the conversation and makes it a less friendly experience. I think there should be harsher penalties for users that express this.

I remember as a child how I would show off my work at the fair grounds and you would win a prize. At the end of the day everyone that got a blue ribbon (1st place) would meet for a special meeting. Those kids went into a drawing to receive a $50 prize. Even though there was a cool prize for their efforts, many of those children were bickering and making fun of the other ones simply because they didn't get a blue ribbon.

Is this natural in our world as humans to think of something prestigious above others? Do we enjoy holding our high titles heavy above others? Maybe it's just an internet thing. How can we possibly understand each other and act as a community if we're constantly judging each other simple because of our fun little hats?

We're the community. For regulars that post in this forum, they know what I'm talking about. In less than a year, Bungie.net is more than likely going to get a plethora of new members. Who are they to look up to for guidance? We're the future of the bungie.net community and we should act as one. I am all for everyone working together and sharing that blue ribbon. Can we please come together and be a community guys?

Isn't that what our blue banner is for, right at the top of this forum? We're all winners. Lets have some fun.

Thank you.

Who the hell do you think I am?

Seriously? I'm pretty sure almost all of us just have fun with the titles, and nothing more.

  • 01.07.2012 7:04 PM PDT

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Titles are cool to get and everyone wants the most best and exclusive thing. It is understandable for their to be elitism but really at this time most people don't care about title bars unless they are custom.

  • 01.07.2012 7:04 PM PDT

Titles are really just for fun, and maybe even for showing age, rather than rank. I think you're overlooking point.

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

I'll start of by stating two points.

First off, I'm going to be brutally honest. It is the lower members who create this false image of elitism. I honestly, very very rarely see a Mythic or Legendary member flaunt, brag, or put another member down simply because he or she is a higher rank in a serious matter. There is no argument against that, it is true. It honestly aggravates me knowing that those who feel all Mythic members are "Elitists" think everything other Mythic members and myself post is completely biased and irrelevant.

Sure, there may be a few but it isn't a problem now like it has before.

Secondly, what would the point of earning higher titles be if no one felt a little bit of accomplishment or pride in earning it? Your example is a terrible one. No one is "competing" and titles are not "prizes". They are simply "Good Job" stickers that everyone has the potential to earn.

I don't mean to be rude by any means but you and the others who believe this community is suffocating beneath the weight of elitism is wrong and simply creating a bigger problem that doesn't really exist.

The problem is that too many people are putting too much value into titles and forget to appreciate the little bit of flair Bungie has given us for sticking around and staying active for a while.

This member has the name "Marathon", I am VERY impressed, more so than a title. I am surprised no one took that name.

Basically, I make the best topics ever.

Feedback!
Duardo: This thread is locked for being stupid.
cortana 5 : It's perpetually my time of the month and I'm just grouchy.
Foman: I see absolutely no reason, either theoretical or practical, that this is not a superb idea. Excellent work, my friend.

And this is why I make satire topics about how people over exaggerate the elitism on this site.

90% of the time, elitism on this site is used as a joke.

10% of the time, there are actually people with high title bars that actually think we care.

First off, I'm going to be brutally honest. It is the lower members who create this false image of elitism.

I get it. Us "members" create this false sense but is it invisible to everyone else? People can get into exclusive groups because they have a silly bar color? I'm not talking just mythics or legendary. Even people that have a certain join date. There is no way for the newer members to show their recognition. Am I forced to just sit here and "wait my time" until something comes along and picks me up?

Or until my title bar turns into a different color, then I might start getting some recognition. Again, not targeting Mythics or Legendaries specifically, just stating what I see in many other public forums.

It honestly aggravates me knowing that those who feel all Mythic members are "Elitists" think everything other Mythic members and myself post is completely biased and irrelevant.
It irritates me too. Sometimes I see very good ideas get thrown around forums and they're completely disregarded because of their title. Even if it's not thrown out into the public, it's still there.

Secondly, what would the point of earning higher titles be if no one felt a little bit of accomplishment or pride in earning it?
There would be no point. The entire point of the system is to encourage spending and investing time into a single account. Making users appreciate their time that they have spent here and get a little prize for their trust that they have amongst the community.

I don't mean to be rude by any means but you and the others who believe this community is suffocating beneath the weight of elitism is wrong and simply creating a bigger problem that doesn't really exist.
Perhaps. Mainly because I see people and myself are guilty of creating a false sense of pride. My black bar has nothing special about it. I am just a member of this community. Not anything special. I have to look up to everyone else and see how they post, catch up on the latest material just to participate in a conversation. This whole thing of elitism has become more apparent to me ever since Bungie went dark. We have less to talk about. So we look at each other.

The problem is that too many people are putting too much value into titles and forget to appreciate the little bit of flair Bungie has given us for sticking around and staying active for a while.
That's my point. Can't we just be a community and act as one? Put the titles aside and remove this false sense of elitism that exists here in the community. Not even with members titles. Also with the flood having "bronies" and MLG tryhards" and "newbies" and "08" members.

It's something that the community created ourselves and it's up to us to realize that it's not a part of us. It's like a leech that sticks with you where ever you go. You can't do anything about it whether you realize it or not.

More like 97.5% / 2.5%.

But it's not over-exaggerated, it's here. It's in this community forum and on this website. We are almost forced to remind ourselves about why we care so much about getting that blue title on our head.

Do you see my point?

I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

I seemed to have stumbled onto the serious portion of the interwebs tonight.

Elitism is simply part of society, the thought of a utopian society where everyone gets along and plays nice is fantasy. There islegitimate elitism here on the forums, but it's contained to a very small (comparatively) portion of the population. Most of the perceived elitism, as already stated, done in jest... a joke... not serious... etc.

Advice for dealing with both? Shrug it off.

Elitism

Where did it start?

You see, there was a person who thought he was better than everyone else.
How did it begin?
"Title hoarding", as you call it, started when a member thought that his title makes him superior, simply.
Surely there has to be some explanation as to where all this "title hoarding" took place.
No, that's not the direct cause of it.Was it the initial placement of these on our account?
You might, but "we" don't.Just because someone says something, we automatically assume it's that way because of the color of their bar.
Yeah, it is, but "some" is a very minuscule percentage of the community.
It's sad how some people literally go through these forums and won't even notice or respond to other users posts simply because of their color.
(I'll assume you didn't mean to use the word "from" in that sentence.) Such a small amount of people do it, it really makes no difference.I think it degrades from the conversation and makes it a less friendly experience.
There are no penalties. Why? Because it's only their opinion.I think there should be harsher penalties for users that express this.
Cool story bro. :D
You never mentioned thinking about something prestigious above others. I'll assume you meant to say "to think of themselves better then others, based on things like title", to which I'd answer no.
Is this natural in our world as humans to think of something prestigious above others?
You might, but "we" don't.Do we enjoy holding our high titles heavy above others?
What makes you think that?Maybe it's just an internet thing.
In your hypothetical reality that doesn't represent Bungie.net at all, I don't know how.How can we possibly understand each other and act as a community if we're constantly judging each other simple because of our fun little hats?
I know what you're trying to get at, but you are making no sense along the way and I disagree with a lot that you're presuming.
For regulars that post in this forum, they know what I'm talking about.
Sure.In less than a year, Bungie.net is more than likely going to get a plethora of new members.
Their own intelligence and any community member nice enough to guide them.Who are they to look up to for guidance?
We are the bungie.net community, we aren't acting and we don't have to act. We're the future of the bungie.net community and we should act as one.
Is your favorite color red, by chance?I am all for everyone working together and sharing that blue ribbon.
We're already together and we're already a community. Can we please come together and be a community guys?
The blue banner? That's the title of this forum. It means that you're in the Bungie.net community forum.
Isn't that what our blue banner is for, right at the top of this forum?

If this "problem" really is about something that doesn't matter being blown up into something that does matter, then why are you letting what shouldn't matter, matter?

Because it's human nature. It's like working your whole life and getting good grades in school and college just so you can get a foot in the door above another person. This job leads to your future success and therefore will get you your dream job.

Because you accomplished that gives your more privileges above other people that applied for the same job. It's human nature to categorize and judge other people by the work that they have done in their past. This is no different from a simple video game forum. It's just sad that this has diminished into this.

  • 01.07.2012 7:55 PM PDT

I have to side with Blink here, he has the same perspective as I. Your examples connect to B.net in no way whatsoever. No one "works" to "achieve" a title. My PPD is a 2.4, does that show I worked harder than anyone else who isn't Mythic? Definitely not. It's only because I've been around and consistently active for a little longer than others. THAT'S IT.

Now I definitely don't feel like I have a "foot in the door over another person" by any means here on B.net. What success or dream job will my Mythic title lead to?

Even if that isn't your point and you are simply describing human nature, it is still inaccurate. This is a forum, not a job. I don't really see anyone who brings that sort of "nature" here to B.net.

It's human nature to categorize and judge other people by the work that they have done in their past. This is also very opinionated as well. This is definitely not human nature, it is the nature of very conceited people who easily get jealous when they see others with more than them or have something they don't have.
