Are you sure...? Wasn't Oni created during their contract with microsoft, aswell as the myth and marathon

I would not be mad as I made the decision to break off from the company that owns the game I made. Since I did not own the game and I made the choice to break off it would completely irrational to be mad.

a just married couple wants to adopt a baby because they can't make their own. Sure, it's technically not really their child, but it is their child.

you spent the last 10 years of your life working on 3 amazing products, only to be told that you no longer have control of any of them and can no longer continue to make similar ones?

I'd be pissed.

The problem with what you are saying is that Bungie asked to be independent, they wanted to make a new IP instead of just being stuck with the same, repetitive formula of 'make a game which cannot be too adventurous or too similar to previous ones'. With a new IP they can be free to express their ideas without having to worry, similar to why Halo:CE was such a good game, bungie made a new game with little constraints and expectations.

For one I am glad that bungie left Microsoft, it is never good to stay with a company which dictates your every move. Also I really do not want Halo to grow stale like CoD has, which is why I am a bit sceptical to the new trilogy however luckily with Halo 343 Industries is a great company unlike Treyarch and all the other companies which are making CoD and also the shell of what was Infinity Ward.

lol that doesn't work at all. Its more along the lines of a married couple having to go out of the country and not being able to take the baby along, so that give it to a babysitter (Bungie). When the couple comes back, the babysitter wants a different job, even though he/she has developed a bond with the baby (Halo). So, in giving up the job (splitting from microsoft) they must give up the baby (Halo). If the baby meant that much to him/her, she/he would have kept the job.

Honestly? Once a creator declares that they are finished with a particular creation/work, they tend to keep moving forward and not look back, dwell on, or attempt to recreate more "variations on a theme".

Artists have traditionally sold their works and then moved on to create something else that inspires them with little concern over who owns their past work (especially if the artist sold it) or what that new owner does with it.

I think that you are assuming that the creator is more concerned with "what happens to my creations" than "now I will go out and create something new and that I find exciting" and that it is a "one or the other" sort of decision. It's not.

If we look back to when artists (painters, sculptors, composers, writers) were "retained by a benefactor", typically a noble or rich merchant, those artists were not "released from service" until they had satisfied and given their benefactor what they wanted. Then, that artist was "released" and able to seek out their own future, fame and fortune in the world.

This situation really isn't all that different.

They weren't told this, they chose this. And if you listen to the statements made by many Bungie employees they were sick of being forced to work on only Halo.

You are Destiny.

Technically Microsoft always owned the Halo IP..and Bungie. Once Bungie was strong enough, they asked for their independence back, in exchange for creating three more Halo games.
3 games? Wasn't it just ODST and Reach?

What your describing has little to do with Bungie's feelings on past events, based on the general feeling you get from employees in one of their most recent videos "see you starside".

I believe Bungie is not only tired of making Halo, but they're also still interested in it as fans. They want someone else to finish their project and they want to start making a completely new game.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Lets take Bungie, around for 20 years and all their games.

Bungie games no longer in their control:

- Myth franchise
- Oni
- Halo series

Games Bungie still owns:

- Pathways into Darkness
- Gnop
- Marathon series
- Minotaur
- Crimson (publisher rights)

Bungie is a great game dev, they had fun with all their projects and it is good to just move on.

I think having Microsoft have full control of Halo now is one of the best things for Bungie in a VERY long time. After 10 long years they can work on a totally new game.

While yes, it's good because then we can still have Halo, it should have been up to them whether they wanted to keep Halo or not. The original creator of an idea should ALWAYS maintain the rights to their creation if they want it.

LOL, Bungie is not mad, infact I think they are the happiest they have been for a long time.

Microsoft was their overlord, forcing them to make Halo after Halo. If you look at any of Bungie's older games, Bungie will make 1 game, make a totally different game, then another different game (possibly set in the same universe).

I think that "Destiny" or "Project Tiger" has been a side project some people on Bungie have been working/talking about for years now, waiting for when they can work on it.

Yes, everything worked out this time, because they were ready to be done with Halo. But sometimes the creator of something gets screwed by the company, most specifically, cartoon creators. Their show gets cancelled, and they can never produce it again because the company wouldn't give it back to them.

Why are you being nosey? Are you a perv or something?

If it made me happy I would probably be upset about it. If it stressed me out I would most likely be relieved. Either way I figure that I would have some great new opportunities.

Agreed. All the changes are good and add variety. Do we really want another Halo 3? Just running around with one gun and no armor abilities? It's good that 343 wants to try something new. Do we really want the same thing for three more games?

And what if I were getting tired of making such products and wanted to reinvent and test new things?

No one is stopping you from doing that. You can make whatever new things you wanted. You just can't go back to your number 1.
Are you unaware of why Bungie left Halo, or are you subtly trolling?

This sort of thing seems like a healthy departure for Bungie. The last thing that a group of people want for their creation is for its innovativeness to stagnate. I fear that had Bungie been in the business of making Halo games beyond Reach, this could have very possibly happened. We would all suffer as a result.

As has been said numerous times before, Bungie as a studio is bigger than Halo and now is the time that they are wanting to experiment with new ideas, which is exactly what they should be doing. I'm sure that Bungie is in some way experiencing what many of the great musical artists of the past have dealt with: a public so used to the work that made them famous that they are unwilling to hear the new material.

Also, to be frank, if most artists dwelt on the past, innovation and true creativity would disappear entirely. No, this is an appropriate move for Bungie, and one that we as the game-consuming public will all benefit from greatly.

The reason why they stopped is not only, they want to work on a new project, but just so they are their own independent company, and aren't hovered over by Microsoft.

Per Audacia Ad Astra!

The baby is gone but to me it's the best thing that happened to them, they need to reinvent themselves with something particular and unique and maybe they got this special "thing".

You know, this week i was on a PS3 fan website and some of the members were bashing Bungie because of the interview given by Hao Chen at Gameindustry (on improvement of their new engine) Back in 2000 before Mac World nobody know what was Halo and once Jason Jones show it everybody have their jaw dropped, imagine this could happen this year (or maybe next year) but even bigger, this new franchise or kid can maybe appeal this new fanbase who never believe in them...

Possibilities are huge, but they made their choice : let the kid growing up on his own.
This is how they feel, they believe in this "new" thing and they want to make it happen, there is so much courage behind the wall of Bellevue, because they did'nt choose easiness and stay with the old game for ever and ever again, they just want to make something different and creative.

I will finish with the interesting fact that both Bungie and Respawn are in the same "rare" case, Bungie take their independance because they want it, while Respawn (Ex-Infinity Ward) take it because they were forced to do it, but now both of them work hard on their 2 respective childs that they both own, similar case, similar ambition, similar success ? maybe they will be two serious rival in the future who know...

I guess I was just taking it from the perspective that they created it, it is their game (although not "technically"), and someone else is taking it away.

Sure, they got their freedom.

Do you think the Jews in the Holocaust would have given up their children to be free from the concentration camps?

Extreme, I know, but still.

Also, I'm not talking about creating more Halo's. I understand it can get repetitive creating the same thing over and over, but to not even be able to manage games they actually made is completely absurd to me.

Let's not forget what truly made Bungie who they are today.

  • 01.08.2012 1:13 PM PDT

I'd make something a lot better, not tell anyone about it, and then let it all play out until I did tell.

  • 01.08.2012 1:19 PM PDT

~Long Live Halo 2
Only regret is I didn't play more of it.

If you haven't noticed by now, I'm sort of a jerk.

Bungie sold the rights to Halo the day they signed a contract with Microsoft. Part of the deal with the split was that Microsoft kept Halo.

And after 10 years, it's time for a new game.
