Ok, played Halo: Combat Evolved. The Assault Rifle in the trailer is just about completely identical to the original, what's the deal ?
I really think you should be extremely careful on choices for weapons for the new Halo.
Think about it, the first Halo didn't have live, but it had System Link, but no one used it because the weapons didn't fit a multi-player battle. Halo 2 was so popular and worked great because it had different types of weapons, e.g. SMG is basically an AR and the Battle Rifle was a bit of a tactical weapon. What would a Halo Team Slayer be like if the main weapon was an AR ? It would feel so weird and un-Haloish.
Here's an idea, get 4 players to play Halo: Combat Evolved and see how much the Multi-player sucked, it wasn't rubbish, but it wasn't good, it was weird and just...I don't know how to explain it but it was really weird. Then play Halo 2 on a multi player...feel the difference and the opportunities that the weapon choice brings. Yes there are a few extra weapons in Halo 2, but the difference between the weapons gives you more choice and more of a battle. Feel the change the Halo 2 weapons bring about.
So, to the point, think extremely carefully about weapons for Halo 2, in my opinion i absoloutely hated the AR in Halo. Here you are thinking about the future of Halo, even though this is the last installation, think about it, most people have Halo 2 for the multi-player, because the Campaign became boring after completing it a few times. If there were rubbish weapons in Halo 3, there won't be much Halo 3 being bought or used, and i have a feeling a lot of people would buy the game, finish the story and go back to Halo 2 on Live.
Please think carefully on this, it's quite a concern really.
Excuse the name calling.... but you my friend, are an idiot.

Apparently you didnt play very much H:CE or have very much knowledge of it because it is the game that spawned MILLIONS of lan partys. Its the game that brought competitive gaming to a new level. I cant believe you will sit here and act like the multiplayer in Halo:CE was mediocre or average because it simply was much better than that.

As for this little statement... Just please excuse Halo:CE for having weapons with a purpose. With your theory more variety is better (and A LOT of people think this way), however let me ask you this...
Why is Halo so much better than other FPS? Why does it sell more copies? Why is it the game professionals haven chosen to play for years? Why does it have a factor that keeps you playing for over a year from launch?
The answer to all these questions is that its NOT a generic FPS. It has 10 or so PURPOSEFUL weapons. Every weapon has a time, a place, and a purpose. With Halo 2 bungie lessened that to an extreme degree.... especially when it comes to vehicles. The game has become much more concerned with what looks 'cool' and can be implemented.
Now of course the game also stands out because of its epic storyline (which many think is not a good one) and its great user interface. However, it still all comes back to these core gameplay ideas.
If you want to have 50 weapons, be able to hold 10 at a time, have 35 different vehilces then you are playing the wrong FPS. Other developers have already proven that more isnt always better. Heres an old nintendo statement for you "quality over quantity."
