Subject: Cryptum or Glasslands?

"Each event is proceded by Prophecy. But without the hero, there is no event."-Zurin Arctus The Underking

Forerunner storylines are hard to follow for me but the book looks good. Glasslands looks more interesting but some people really hated it. Which one should I buy?

They walk around and around, halsey and mendez argue, then towards the end of the novel they magically get out.

I thought Cryptum would be the same, but crap was I wrong. I absolutely loved the book. I highly recommend it. I cant say anything about Glasslands since I havent read it.

The quality of book varies by Author as well as content. Though I enjoyed them all, I disliked Cole Protocol and Contact: Harvest (which is disappointing, since it was written by one of the Halo creaters, Staten). The new "Forerunner" books are interesting, and give what I consider to be a much more accurate depiction of Forerunner technology than any of the other books or games ever could, but they can be a headache to follow.

Anything written by Nylund is fantastic, and I even enjoyed The Flood. Even though it followed the game, it offered much of the behind-the-scenes detail that is very cool to anyone who ever wondered where the Marines went after you rescued them during the missing Halo.

This new author, the one who wrote Glasslands, is shaping up to be much like Nylund. Does a very good job of conserving what the Halo universe would have been like, without the gimmicks that were seen in Cole Protocol. I'm enjoying it a lot!

Cryptum style of writing was a little bland but it was alot of content, should have also been made longer.

Although Glasslands has its problem i think most of us will forget about them.

Hmmm, I have a theory about Primordium and Cryptum ... but I'm not ready to share it yet.

OT I also would like to know what is going to happen in Glasslands 2.

I just finished Cryptum, and I can say I solidly enjoyed it. The first half was fairly slow paced, but near the end things picked up. You get a better view of the Forerunners, but at the same time all the things that made them mysterious in the first place have managed to stay intact.

As for Glasslands, overall I enjoyed it, but there are a few things in it that bothered me.

Also, Spoiler Warning for Glasslands below.

1. The Halsey/Mendez plot in the Sphere, was quite frankly, boring. I liked the portrayal, as so far in the series we'd only really seen the view of Halsey and Mendez from a Spartan point of view.

2. Lucy's "retaliation" to Halsey. That one will be obvious once you've read it.

3. Elite mentality. Granted, there likely would be issues with Arby once he got back to his homeworld, but this is ridiculous. In short, the Elites believe Humanity should be wiped out for being sneaky lying buggers, but casually cast aside The Great Schism.

Now, in our time with Arby throughout games or novels, you kind of get the feeling that he was a bit less, "zealous" than his other fellows. But in a statement from Halo 3, this made me think.

"The Grunts newfound courage is but fear. When we are finished, all who serve the prophets will be punished."

I thought, if Arby was thinking along those lines, than what would his more religious fellows think about the Great Schism? They follow their codes of honour and belief more strictly than Arbiter, so it's likely they'd come down on the remaining Covenant harder.

Nope. They just go, "Oh, suprise genocide of our people, it's k bro. You do your thing, we've got to get those sneaky humans over there!"

Another thing too, what happened to, Humans are Reclaimers? The whole reason Truth, Regret and Mercy hid this knowledge was because it would destroy the Covenant. This knowledge seems to have just been left out of the picture. Arbiter was present for many interactions with Spark, so don't you think he would have passed this on to his people?

The only thing I was ever really interested in was the end of the novel. That was when things really started to progress. I was always interested in what happened after the H/C war, and for a novel that was supposed to be centered around this, it didn't do that very much. It only picked up near the end. And the worst part was, the ending was a bloody cliffhanger.

But anywho, I'd go for Glasslands first. It only seemed right to me to read it first because Cryptum is an entirely different series in itself.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

Cryptum.

Then read Primordium after, right away. While Cryptum is still fresh in your mind.

Official fan of Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, (Problem with that?) Halo, and Bungie, also a total gaming junkie.

Cryptum. Honestly, Glasslands read like a fan-fic who's author REALLY hates Halsey.

She really did pull some stunts that were, by anyone's standards, heinous. Kidnapped children, broke regulations on cloning Humans, performed biological augmentations on them. All for what? They weren't necessary to combat the Insurrectionists. Of course, this is all from a canon point of view. From the fans point of view, Spartans came first, then the back story, but unimportant.

And to a previous poster, why was it bizarre that the Sanheilli wanted to wipe out Humans? It wasn't because they were lying, devious "vermin," but it was because Jul knew that Humans wouldn't forget, would rise back to power, and wipe them out. He wanted his race to strike again now, while Humans were still weakened. Dunno how you missed that, it was mentioned half a dozen times.

Halsey is not synonymous with the authoritarian UNSC that commissioned a Supersoldier program. As far as she was told, and could discern, they were absolutely necessary.

It is entirely at the heart of it. Despite the UEG President wanting peace, as well as Lord Hood, these offerings of peace will naturally mean nothing to the Sangheili because "Humans are Liars". Judging from the way the President makes his inauguration speech it sounds like he is making a promise to the UNSC, rather than telling them what they are going to have to do and making that decision for them, indicating that many Humans do not want any more wars.

And the inherent hatred, bigotry, and things such as comparing Humanity to the Flood, and saying how they are good for nothing blah blah blah, does not entirely follow logically from the premise of "Humanity might attack us soon". The idea of wiping out Humanity before they can apparently strike back comes from those two notions. The liars quip is just patently absurd. The other one is believable but poorly reflects the Schism.

Honestly, I would have let the planets have their independence, after instituting some form of human rights constitution and requiring that the planet reimburse the UEG for expenses to set up the colony. History has shown that there have been no successful empires that operated with controlled territories.

So they didn't want to be governed, and they didn't want independence? What do you think would have helped?
