So when a thread has a poll, the common thing for someone to do it to come, vote, then leave. This gets the thread a several votes, but then it dies off due to the lack of comments bringing it back up.

Which is why I was thinking that each vote should count as half a post (in terms of bringing it back to the front). So if a thread got 2 votes and but no replies, it would come back to the top.

What do you think?

I just saw a green monkey nut shot a small tan lizard(?) in a gunny sack.

I don't see how it's an issue. If a poll thread wasn't interesting enough to generate any actual posts, it probably wasn't a worthwhile thread to begin with.

Who the hell do you think I am?

I thought of something like that too. It's actually a pretty good idea. Then maybe more people will use polls as well.

Thats like saying uber nerf armor lock because like 20 percent of the community hates it. Oh wait..................

i have had that issue alot, i think a vote should count just as much as a post. Don't really think the detection is in place... Im not sure wut achro thinks about that though.

But lots of people see the thread as worthwhile in the first place, but instead of posting their opinion they see that their opinion is a poll option and simply click that and leave, allowing the thread to die off.

They obviously don't think of the thread as being worthwhile enough if the poll option was enough for them. Again, I don't see a point.

In some cases. But in a lot of threads, polls are all that they need to be purposeful. If there was a thread in here suggesting a new feature, and you were to vote with or against it, that would ensure that the topic didn't die.

I have seen you future

I am going to have to disagree. If the topic is interesting and worth being discussed then people will comment to discuss the topic at hand.

What will happen instead is that people will add polls to every thread (so they have another way for their thread to get bumped), and threads with little discussion value will get bumped because everyone kept voting yes or no.

Hmmm... that's an issue I didn't foresee. Maybe the Ninjas could lock the threads?? Or perhaps people would now not to vote at all so that the thread would die off.

To be honest, I usually avoid poll threads. I'm not sure why, but I usually find they're not interesting or are bias. I don't take them seriously, since they're so easy to game.

Don't threads with biased polls get locked?

Solely voting in polls does not aid in the discussion of a thread. Deducing that this site is to discuss a range of issues, I personally don't think it would be fair for users solely voting on a poll, to overtake a topic involving discussion, on the forum topics page.

Usually, but I'm referring to having 3 options. The first two are opposite, and then the third is something ridiculous or goes with one of the other two. I can never take them seriously.

I think the bias lies within the creators first post, not the poll. The opinion he/she provides could alter someone's view. A poll should work by having no outside influence which could aid in a biased vote.

Oh yeah. I hate those, like "A: I agree with OP. B: I disagree with OP. C: Justin Bieber ate pancakes".

Those totally put the name of polls to shame.

Or maybe a new forum similar to the voting booth. The only difference would be that regular members could start poll questions.

Theme Builders

It's not something that would work in practice. If a thread isn't interesting enough to gather comments then why would I want that thread in the way of others that actually have a discussion going on?

Bad idea. You only realistically need 5 votes for a 2 answer poll to 25 votes for a 8 answer poll. By the time the thread has died, you've probably already received all the data you really need. Otherwise, such polls as my "What's your title worth to you?" thread would have probably lasted a lot longer, although I believe the the poll has already been finished long ago.

In other words, if it's a good, interesting or needed poll, people would revive it with their own replies to the poll.

If that happened I'd add poll to every thread because I want my posts to be at the top of the forum forever.

  • 01.09.2012 3:28 PM PDT

Key

I suppose it could work as long as there were no ways of exploiting it.
