Crazy fool... Why do you always have to jump?! One of these days you're gonna land on something as stubborn as you are! ...And I don't do bits and pieces...

First off, there is no way they are going to have brand new armor between Halo 2 and Halo 3 which takes place just a matter of days apart, they cant build better armor that fast, and as for the upgrades, those dont have to be a higher level either, in "First Strike", Fred got his gauntlet upgrade, he didnt have mark VI armor yet, it was still Mark V, and the upgrade was FOR his Mark V armor, soooo.... the MC's new gauntlet upgrade is probably a Mark VI upgrade, if you look, all his armor is still the same from Halo 2, just the gauntlets and some other very minor changes...

Perhaps it's not so much as the armor has been upgraded, as it has been damaged?

Perhaps what we are looking at is the Halo 2 Mark VI, but because it's been beaten around so much that peices and small plates have fallen off. While I acknowledge that only losing the two top bumps on each gauntlet doesn't seem plausable, the thereoy does explain the scrapes and dings on the chest plate as well as accounting for the dusty color and the bolted patches just above the knee. It also fits with the trailer being 1/3 through the game.

I highly doubt that, look at them, they look brand new, no scratches, nothing, and the bump closest to the fingers would be in the wrong place if plates had fallen off his gauntlet, however, it does not appear to me that it is his same gauntlet, just damaged.... it looks way to nice and reformed to be the same one...

yeah, that was "The Fall of Reach"...
CPO Mendez is training them, but you never hear anything after that in any of the books, so maybe they will show up in Halo 3, or maybe the next book... hopefully Halo 3, I think it would be fun to add more spartans to the storyline...
