After reading Frankie talk about the "universe of drama" in the trailer, I decided to watch it more closely.

When you watch the trailer, pay close attention to the Master Chief walking towards the camera. If you look closely, you will see the Chief magically appear after a dust cloud swirls across the screen twenty seconds in. You can clearly see the background and the lack of the MC and then -poof- he's there.

Second, pay close attention to where the Chief is when Cortana begins flashing on the screen, and where he is when the flashing ceases. This happens twice. The first time the change in distance is more noticeable. During the flash, the Chief covers far more ground than his walking pace would account for. In the seven seconds of the first flash he moves farther than he should. Look closely! Before the flashing he is still walking in the shadow of that distant hill, and then is almost to the grunt crossing sign!

Then, the second flashing begins at :49, and pay attention to where he is. Again, he jumps forward while we are all distracted by trying to discover what is going on in the foreground.

These are easier to see when you grab the position bar and run it back and forth. It appears as if the Chief teleports across the landscape when Cortana/the Gravemind speaks. If you don't believe me, go check it out for yourself!

2 things.

1. This also perplexed me too, (the apearing out of nowhere part) but I think in the dust cloud I could make him out rounding the corner.

2. When did he start being called "The Gravemind"? Isn't he just "Gravemind"?

One game I'm not joking a little like 7 year old said and I quote " tell me what your dick looks like so I can imagine it in my head and beat off to it"

If Team Swat became ranked, would there still be no shields?

Amazing!

There isn't a point to this.

It is only a teaser.

My point is this: Frankie told us there is more to the trailer than meets the eye, and this is an unexplained phenomenon.

Sierra 173 - The Siegebreaker

your looking too hard for stuff. that is a technique used by film makers and such to speed up the progress of something while you are distracted with something like flashbacks, dreams or whatnot. its nothing special, just a device used to speed things up a bit...

and 'the gravemind' is a better name because its basicly a compilation of a bunch of dead folk and their minds into one warped personality.

(10:19:49 PM) Scruss: oh and pezza, i saw what you did to that cat
(10:20:17 PM) Pezza: You were the one with the video camera breathing heavily. Of course you saw.

Remember that he can run quite fast, so it could make sense that he just can from no where.

This means that a teleportation grid was established on EArth. FWA

1 kilometer in 17 seconds hurt actually. It is in the books. But he does just appear. And he never makes a running pace... How he got there is well no idea. BUt something happened. Maybe a teleporter like in Halo since he is close to the arc.

Who would teleport for only a few feet at a time? Seems to me like if you're going to teleport you may as well "go this distance".

  • 05.12.2006 9:43 PM PDT

People with poor depth perception tend to go the extra mile.

Uniquely Hard Sniper Map

Master Chief doesn't just "appear". If you look closely at the end of the road you can see heat waves over it. Heat waves skew vision and make things seem to appear from nowhere.

Normally I'd agree, but Bungie has a history of going out of their way to mess with people's minds. Strange e-mails going out to Marathon discussion groups from Cortana before the first Halo game had even been announced? They've been laying groundwork for these games since 1999 - I'm betting they've put a lot of hints in places we won't even spot until we know how the story ends.

And I'm betting they're loving the buzz the trailer has already created.

Well for starters, four seconds in the screen is completely WHITE. Second, the camera may be zooming in on him, but at the same time it is moving backwards. Third, you can see that there is NOTHING where his feet would be until :20. Even if all of this is dramatic cinematography, I resent being called a dummy because YOU take everything for granted.

Ok, at the beginning of the seen, there are 4 trees but I do not know the name of them but, the figure that appears right after the cloud of dust pasts by between the 4 trees is MC right??

These are two captures of the same section of screen, the first at :18 and the second at :20, after a cloud of dust. Show me where the Chief is before the cloud, and what corner he came around.

bungie messing with our heads?

it could make sense that he did teleport in, in halo you didnt ever get teleported right to were you wanted to be, so this may be the same thing, teleport cheif close enough so he doesnt have to go through the whole covenent armada, only half of it

Everything else in the trailer is almost perfect. Why would Bungie allow this very noticable detail to be in the final released trailer if it wasnt meant to be?

The chief is moving noticable to where he shouldnt be if he were walking at that pace the whole time, and there are a thousands other tiny details in the trailer just like this. I think they are all or mostly intentional.

"We came, we saw, we conquered, then realized we had no way home."

Ok, here's a theory, perhaps. Over at Halo2Boards, I have been working on a thread since last October on Time-Space Anomolies that exist in the Halo universe as referenced in the novels as a result of Slipspace transitions, and I think the community has pulled together a pretty good theory. Because it is late, and the theroy is rather lengthy, I will not post it here, but you are of course able to read it under the Halo2Boards Halo3 Rumors forum.

To give the jest of it, it basically involves the influence and role that gravitational forces play durring an object's entrance and exit of Slipspace. The greater the gravitational influence, the greater possiblity that an anomaly could occur. Example: As the Ascendant Justice transitioned to Reach while within Threshold's imense gravitational effect, there were a significant amount of anomolies that occured during the transition and afterwards, such as decreased slip-travel periods and retrogression in time.

Another example: the Forerunner crystal found on Reach for some reason altered gravtitational forces, especially upon slipspace transition. After the first attempt of slipspace transition from Reach aboard the Ascendant Justice-Gettysburg, the time anomolies were significantly higher, sending the whole crew and ship back almost a week in time. Forgive me if none of this makes sense or seems out of the ordinary for a theory, but many pages of very thurough research, posting and diagrams can be found on Halo2Boards under ~Time-Space Anomolies~ if you are still interested.

But back to the topic at hand. While I understand why Master Chief would be seen to cover this ground in unrealistic time frames given the period of the "transmisions" as a result of cinematic time adjustment to keep the flow of the trailer, I will take this subject as though it were actually something of significance and not a cinematic effect.

Using this theory previously stated, time travel should be feasable in the Halo story and could possibly play a role in Halo3 (I won't go any further into that department). When watching the trailer, you notice the light refraction effect that is observed over the hot road (the wavy, swivering of the air put simply). But what if this refraction were not refraction at all, but instead some kind of slipspace exit point from another time, almost like the transition out of teleportation on Halo. (On a side note, for those who are unaware, teleportaion on the Halo's are actually slipspace transitions only on a very small scale, enough that the object going through is not torn atom by atom, but safely delivered to a new location.)

What if much earlier in the game, Master Chief was sent back in time. On Halo2Boards, we believe we may have found two points at which this could have occured. One aboard the Forerunner ship as it leaves High Charity since you never really know what could have happened between that point and when you see Master Chief emerge with the ship at Earth in the final cut-scene (Possible Proof: Remember that the Prophet Truth as a few shards of the Crystal still with him, mentioned at the end of Halo:First Strike in Harbinger, so their gravitational effect may still be enough to send an object far back in time in conjuction with the Forerunner ship and the Master Chief aboard it. Those shards still do have some gravitational altering abilities to them. Notice how the Prophets chair bobs strangely in the presence of the shards at first. Pretty suspicious to me). The other, right after Master Chief has returned to Earth and some how comes into contact with other Forerunner aritfacts and some how is sent through time. Both theories are a bit of a stretch, but they do have quite a lot of Halo universe physics and data to back them up.

So, what if you are watching (in the Halo3 trailer) Master Chief emerge from this time travel through slipspace, represented as the supposed light refraction over the road. Because he has just emerged from over a 900 thousand year time travel event, chances are some kind of after effect occurs and as it does, the Cortana and Gravemind transmisions obscure the Chief as the after-effect teleports him. Or, quite possibly the transmisions occur in time with the after effect as a result of the time travel, where the transmisions are now just catching up in the fabric of time and space, however, that idea may take it a little too far.

Almost all theories and ideas I have seen concerning this strange Master Chief "teleportation" so far could be valid in one way or another, but it most likely is shown just for cinematographic effect in attempt to keep the trailer following smoothly. I mean, do you really want to wait for the Chief to walk that distance? lol. Besides, this is Bungie we are talking about, anything could happen! lol.

hey, if you have read the commentary about the trailer on E3 website, you should know that bungie told us that halo 3 cinematic had been done very fast because they just wanted to show us the engine... nothing is hidden in this video, no teleportation, no mystery, just a cinematic...
