Subject: Profanity Filter

Alright, I'm sure most people know by now that the word -blam!- is censored. However, for some reason the past and present progressive tense aren't, raped and raping respectively.

Why is this? Since the words aren't filtered out, does that mean that it isn't a bannable offense to use such words?

I thought the word filter only applied to the letters than are in order, not whats attatched on either side of them? Correct me if im wrong on that one.

The whole issue of the profanity filter needs an overhaul in my opinion. But Achronos and the webteam have stated that fixing or adjusting it, is not high on their list of priorities.

Just because someone was lazy at some point in time doesn't mean that the words aren't a bannable offense. It's still a word thats root is blammed, which probably means that those words are against the rules too.

If I remember correctly, the profanity filter isn't made to stop all possible forms of profanity or all possible discussion of such subjects. It's made to get users thinking about posting more maturely and appropriately.

In the case of ..., I think the profanity filter blocks this because it's something that they don't want users referring to or talking about in a PG-13 website.

I suspect llamas are secretly wizards. I <3 poptarts n' milk. I like me. Grimick is defined as: a logical parodox, the act of funnaling a potato down your throat, and a deliciously flavored muffin (with pecons and blueberries). Norway is the Swedish word for 'moron'. My sister has cancer, so i get to use handicap parking and cut small children in line at Disneyland.

"Don't eat doughnuts on thin ice."

"The pancake, my friend, has officially been flipped."

If its not blocked then it doesn't seem like something that they would give out banns for. Just be very careful with the subject. Obviously it the kind of subject where you are on thin ice, and being crude with it is like eating doughnuts.

Don't eat doughnuts on thin ice.

I believe Achronos stated that the profanity filter cannot be changed without some major fiddling with the website.

I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

I'm disappointed this even has to be asked, more so by the fact that this isn't the first time it's been asked. The profanity filter isn't an absolute guide to what words you cant and can't use. The filter itself, from what I remember, is just a default list given by Microsoft or something that's been modified a little. But really, the point here is that we shouldn't even need the profanity filter to let us know what words are and aren't appropriate in discussion, commonsense and general intelligence should be good enough. Use your head.

On the contrary, I am quietly confident he said that altering the profanity filter is actually quite an easy task to do.

The fact of the matter is (as other users have said), we shouldn't even see the need for a profanity filter if users could discuss topics diligently without resorting to flaming.

It is funny, when writing posts with bad words in it, I know just write blam instead of letting it get corrected.

Why? It doesn't seem to be a big problem and the web team has better things to be doing.

The profanity filter isn't perfect; it's designed to stop minor instances of misuse, not all. The forum moderators step in, usually, when there's someone saying things they shouldn't.

You don't get banned just for saying a word, it's all about context. Unless, of course, you bypass the filter to say that word, then the mods don't seem to care about context at all and will ban/warn regardless.

Basically, I can say "dick" without fear of being banned, because in this context it is harmless. But if I decided to call somebody a dick, that would be flaming and I'd probably be banned.

It's also worth noting that if I wanted to use the pseudonym of dick that begins with a 'p' (and is, funnily enough, less offensive), I'd have to bypass the filter. So even if it was in the same context, it could possibly be seen as a bannable offence.

What I'm trying, and failing, to say is that it isn't always the word that gets you in trouble, it's the context and the intent.

At least that's how I see it, anyway.

He doesn't sound very wise then. Of course, using profanity makes it more difficult to sound intelligent, but it doesn't make it impossible.

Not to mention it's sort of irrelevant because 'raped', 'raping', etc aren't exactly profanity. They're perfectly acceptable terms that just happen to be describing a horrific act.

This isn't true in all cases. If filter evades are within the context of a discussion they might be overlooked, such as using the word the OP described, or a term for male bonding, but to be on the safe side you should really sllow the filter to take effect.

  • 01.11.2012 2:39 AM PDT

@spaboolly

I would agree that in a perfect world (or forum, whatever) they wouldn't need a profanity filter. I believe the intent behind it was to minimize flaming and harassment and maximize intelligent, mature discussion. It really is the context that makes all the difference. Some words whose meanings are not offensive in nature have come to be used as derogatory slang. These words, even if used properly, can be misconstrued as offensive because they've been abused to the point where people will automatically derive that negative connotation. Simple solution- blam them out.

I don't really see the filter being a problem in posts. When would you want to use those words in a forum anyway? I realize that it can sometimes be a valid topic of discussion, but I wouldn't really consider it appropriate for Bnet since they like to keep their forums pretty clean. I think you're making the technicality a bigger deal than it needs to be. Just use good judgment.

I basically think of it with the same logic I use for every decision that might be considered questionable: If you have to ask, don't do it.

And yes, sometimes a little profanity can be used appropriately and without being offensive in order to get a -blam!- point across. But it's an admirable skill to be able to make a strong, well-stated retort without it.

While I don't have much to say about this particular instance...

I love the -blam!- profanity filter! Do you know how many Facebook posts I censored today? (-blam!- Windows!) Here I can go on and on about how -blam!-gy and -blam!- it is, and I don't have to worry about sounding (as) stupid!

This is the -blam!-.

I know exactaly what you are talking about. When I was making mention to something that on the "male bonding side", I was blown away that I was hit with the -blam!-. I was confused how a word that wasn't even a four letter word could be filtered.
