Subject: Let's talk general forum moderation vs. bnet moderation.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

The mods aren't that strict but I wish they WERE for SOME rules.

Like "don't be a jerk", that is probably one of the least enforced rules I have seen and too many people get away with it while people get banned for "bumping" and other little things.

But, you should see the mods on other sites like Halo Waypoint, you can get banned there for having an opposing opinion or if you have a conflict with another moderator.

I like things the way they are and most of the time the ninjas are VERY merciful.

If I am not posting, then I am reading what you might have posted.

I hate pressing the report button and than there is nothing for another hour or so... Well maybe that is a little over exaggerated, but Moderation on b.net is poo.

The mods aren't that strict

It's not really about how strict they are, it's about the offense. I think that most of the moderators are very fair.

For example, this thread may have gotten some people banned, but the moderator used common sense, seeing that most of the discussion was pretty mild, and didn't ban anybody from it.

Bungie's fair with banning people, I accidentally posted a topic on the wrong forum, and explained that I did on the post, and the Mod was quite understanding

Of course, the mods only carpet ban and pinpoint ban people if it gets out of hand.

People always say the "mods are too strict" when they themselves get banned/warned.

I have been banned/warned several times and every time it was my fault (I did get a ban shortened because the time =/= to the crime).

the moderation here is good but sometimes I feel that some rulebreakers are ALWAYS ignored and I feel the mods moderate thinking that it is sometimes better to deal with 1 person affected than a group of offenders which I feel is wrong.

I acknowledge my user name is stupid. However, I promise I'm not.

Disclaimer: The latter is a lie.

I have broken the rules a fair bit, and I have been banned and warned numerous times. On a few occassions, I still believe some bans to be unjust. However, for the most part, I think they do a pretty good job.

We have a system in place if a member every feels that their ban was unjustified. We even have an article in HFCS and linked in the rules which offer guidelines on how to go about appealing a forum ban.
Posted by: Quantam
The thing is the rules are so vague the moderators can ban anyone they want and probably get away with it.

That is a good thing, but it implies that any new or old mods won't go the way of Pezza...
I'm glad you guys updated those articles by the way. The old one was wrong and a tad unfair. I like the revision.

It's a case by case basis, any mod will tell you that. They look at the ban history and make the call.

Eurgh - this is going to sound horribly boot lickeresque, but honestly, in my time here, I have never had any problem with the moderation.
All it comes across as to me is, people don't understand when to stop pushing the envelope and accept when enough is enough.

Compared to most online moderators BNet's are less strict by leagues upon leagues. Seriously. If you think that BNet mods will ban people excessively, and without thought, I implore you to visit The Waypoint Forums. The abysmal moderation staff there (which has made many people, including myself, leave their forums altogether) will people for getting into simple disagreements because it looks poorly on their community. THEN, they'll delete all evidence of the "offending" post(s), so any form of legitimate ban appeal is impossible because the only people who can see the deleted posts are those who are sentencing you.
Firstly, posts are only deleted under strict circumstances, such as Duplicate posts/spam. All other offenses are edited, and edits are visible to all moderators and administrators, so if you would like to appeal a ban, then you can contact any moderator or administrator. We are a small team, but we are very active, and hold tight to the rules and regulations.
I have been banned on waypoint 7 times (at least). All of them have been for arguments getting too out of hand. None of them resulted in the swapping of any ad hominem remarks. No vulgarity was involved, nor was there anything close to swearing.

Yet every post associated with every ban has been deleted. You're lying. End of story.

OT: Just to reiterate a part of my other post that I don't think was quite clear enough: People need to realize how good they have it here compared to other places. Seriously.

Any member who violates their membership agreement so severely (by using this site to openly admit to, discuss, encourage or enable real crimes) is a danger to this community. All it would take is one lawyer, one pissed off parent, one news story, one prosecution any of which link or name this site and we're at risk. ALL of us.

No they aren't, and no they wouldn't.

The absolute most that discussing, encouraging, or enabling "real crimes" on this site would bring is a subpoena. There's no laws against discussing, instructing on, or encouraging crime (it's the First Amendment).

I'm not saying you're wrong for banning these people. But your reasoning is totally off.

While we're here, does any member of Bungie care to clarify their position on users bypassing the filter to say things that aren't inappropriate? Such as "I played -blam!- zombies last night"?

poor ilitch

As a whole, I think the moderation on this site is very good, far better than some other sites. Sure some things slip through the cracks and there may be (subjective) instances where users feel that action may not have been necessary, but by large everything that needs to be taken care of gets taken care of. The only real quarrel I have with the system is the policy of carpet bans, but that's largely due to my own experience with them.

I'm only posting my opinion:

Many people who complain of moderation spend too much time in The Flood.

The Flood is the forum with the most "Stupid" traffic. AKA, the most off topic replies, worthless threads, and rule breaking content. Obviously you'll see more warnings and bans in there due to the constant onslaught of crap.

My only comment- People should know better. If you're going to post in an off topic forum, take the time to read the damn rules and know your boundaries.

Our current form of moderation is just fine, but it would be nice if we had more efficient tools for reporting members.

I honestly don't see much which could be improved.
A PM has always sufficed for any more urgent situations, or if it looks like something is slipping under the radar.

Make reporting a one-click process and provide some sort of feedback; collapsing the post for the reporter for example.. From a user side perspective the report function is annoying to use and appears to do exactly nothing.

The report button is nothing special, a pretty blunt tool, which as you said appears to do -blam!- all. And yes, it would be nice to have it collapse a post for users individually as soon as they've pressed it, so at least you don't have to see whatever crap is there.
But
personally, I think the fact that you can at least directly contact a moderator at a moments notice to be enough to ignore it. It gets everything done one hell of a lot quicker, and while it's not always a viable option, I'll still swear by it in most cases.

While perhaps not related to the OP...

I don't understand why mods lock threads & then don't post a "final post" as to why they're locking them. If the thread is spam, fair enough, but if it's a 2 page discussion thread then an [small] explanation as to why it's been locked would be nice.

It's a very simple answer, because they're not obligated to. Sometimes locking a thread is statement enough.

Obligated to or not, it would certainly stop people posting "why was that locked threads" in The Flood & therefore spamming the forums further. It'd also show "normal" users that it's not just a random lock & that there is actual reasoning behind it.
