ok here we go:

1) the forerunner built the halo rings to stop the flood by wiping out all sentinent life...right? if thats so, why didnt all the flood die out?(not the bipedals but the little tentacle dudes)

2) now lets assume that the forerunner knocked out all sentinet life in the universe. Gravemind survived to our knowledge throughout this time period...correct?(or he's of the line) then what's been keeping HIM alive?

3) Ok, now to my main question: the flood want to stop the use of the halo weapon. What they dont want is for all sentinent life to be annihilated from their grasps...yet, they plan on absorbing the covenant and human species(as well as anything else) into its manifold, which would mean all sentinent life is either dead or of the flood...how would this serve the purpose of the flood?

what is the TRUE purpose of the flood? is there a true purpose?

To provide horror to the story?

The Flood were encountered by the Forerunner, not made.

Imagine what a smeggy day that was. Some random forerunner is just talking a stroll down to the local cyber park when 'wham' a flood jumps on top of him and penertrated him and to top it off he'd forgot to lock the front door.

1) The flood can hibernate for eons on end
2) See my first answer
3) Similar to Star Trek's borg bring all life into one ugly collective family

ok, so the plan was to hope that all the flood would die because they have nothing to eat. well they were wrong because the flood could hibernate.

so would the flood hibernate if they assimilated all sentinent beings into their collective?

1)yeah? only gravemind and the bugger forms. The rest die. I see that as dieing out, gravemind knows that and doesnt want to have another halo fire agains because he knows he cannot survive until sentinent life emerges or he he finds another source of food.

2)SAP

3) No, not similar to star trek's borg. If the borg assimilated all life into its collective, would it die out due to lack of food? Im fielding a no.

gravemind is the head of the flood as far as we can tell. He(it?) doesn't want the halo rings fired. that would annihilate his food source and i'm in the belief that he cannot hibernate again and survive. But if he devours all sentient life as it is, he would have to hibernate anyways. Does eating the rest of sentient life give him enough energy to hibernate and surive until sentient life revives? i doubt it, and im still under the assumption that the flood have another purpose other than simply eating all sentient life.

THe flood are like CANCER because cancer cells keep multiplying until the body the cells belong to cannot keep up with the resources it demands such as blood and hormones.

The flood will kill, eat, take a ship from the dead then kill.eat. take a shi...and so on until all galexys are concored (mabey even move onto a new universe, If one exists!)
