Subject: Carpet banning. What is your opinion on it?

Citizens of Me! The cruelty of the old Pharaoh is a thing of the past. Let a whole new wave of cruelty wash over this lazy land.

Hear the word of Pharaoh. Build unto me a statue of ridiculous proportion. One billion cubits in height......that I might be remembered for all eternity!

And be quick about it!

Personally, I don't think it's a fair thing to do. If a bad thread is made, people don't deserve to be banned just for posting in it. A warning to everyone in the thread would be more appropriate I think, if they even needed that.

What is your stance on carpet banning? Mods are welcome to share their stance on carpet banning, whether they employ it, and why they do or do not employ it.

Edit: adding this to the OP:
The problem is, I'll just make up an example here, lets say an early poster sees the thread and they're scared of the link in the OP, but they still aren't sure if it's a shock site or a hilarious joke. Now this user asks if the link is safe, not knowing if the thread is spam, or not.

Then a mod comes in and carpet bans the thread, not taking situations like this into account. Not to mention, most threads like this only get locked, and not carpet banned, so many users would not even know they aren't supposed to reply to threads like that.

I hate carpets, and they should be banned for being poop magnets for my dog.

But i kind of agree with you. I feel as though when a mod carpet bans a thread he isn't really giving much thought into each users posts. Now i'm not sure if they actually look through every post to see if it's ban worthy or not.

If the problem is that people are all responding to a thread they shouldn't be responding to, it seems fair.

Carpet banning doesn't really exist...
They individually ban the users, it's no different than banning one individual in a thread.
And "carpet banning" is normally just, as it's normally for replying to spam.

I've never seen anyone carpet banned just for replying to a locked thread before it was locked.

Which is why you can message the mods to see what you did and explain why you should not be banned

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

Only for the most obvious, blatant spam, I will sometimes issue a warning to people who have responded to let them know that all they're doing is bumping bad threads back to the top of the forum.

Once you've received a warning, however, you're on notice and might get banned if you do it again.

However, I haven't done any of the above for quite some time now. Months.

Carpet bans are used in extreme cases. It's pretty obvious to tell when to avoids those threads. Just don't reply to spam and you're fine.

If I am not posting, then I am reading what you might have posted.

It's to bad for the people that posted in that thread. And it's their own fault.

  • 01.11.2012 2:53 PM PDT

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

I've been victim of a carpet ban. Normally the moderators tend to be lenient when it comes to certain situations but that changes to zero tolerance when it comes to a thread worthy of a carpet ban. If you reply even slightly off topic, don't be surprised to find yourself victim as well.

Replying to cases involving vulgar or severely inappropriate spam, is spam, and is considered a violation of the rules.

But what about the situation I outlined above, someone asking if the link was safe?

I love Carpet Bans. We need more of them. Personally I would like to see Nuke Bans; however it's kind of hard for mods to pull it of because they need to ban 25 people instantly.

I suppose only if they were the first to post (or a scenario without someone providing a clear answer about what the link is). If they were to come into the thread when there were several replies, and not heed the warnings by other members (or understand their context), then I think the results should be the same for them.

Another one of these threads... *groans*

Warnings and bans are given to people accordingly in carpet bans. I think it's completely fair. If you decide to reply to (bump) such obvious spam/flaming/trolling/etc then you deserve to at least know that it was stupid of you to; and if you warn or ban one person for bumping such a horrible thread, you might as well warn or ban everyone else in the thread.

Honestly, why do you think carpets bans are bad? Is it because you think it's unfair? If you think it's unfair, why do you think it's unfair? If it's because you think some users just didn't know it was against the rules, then I would like to inform you that that is exactly why it happens.

It should be completely obvious that any reply to such threads (any thread that breaks the rules, really) that are deemed carpet-ban-able (carpet-ban-able: Breaking the rules such extreme ways to the point that it would be fair for a moderator to carpet ban) contribute nothing to anything but the bumping of such topics in the forum.

In my professional opinion, people read your post; it's just that they have nothing to say to it. It's just a bland statement. Nothing to really argue or comment on. You know?

I guess. Still rather disappointing knowing that I failed to contribute to the discussion.
