It seems the weapon in line to replace the United States standard issue M-4 rifle looks a lot like the Battlerifle in HALO 2. I guess the game designers based their weapon on it. At anyrate, the M8 is an awsome weapon. Check it out here:

http://www.hk-usa.com/pages/military-le/mil-leimages/xm8_righ tmed.jpg

I think it will be cool to think I will be using a firearm that looks almost exactly like the weapon in HALO 2. (I'm joining the Marines in 2007-8. It depends on if I want to stick around for a while after highschool graduation.)

The only difference It seems is that the M8 is not a bullpup, like the Battlerifle in HALO 2. (Bullpup means that the magazine is fed behind the weapons grip.)

Message me if you want to know more about that, and that thing is cheap, but that "plastic looking" thing is easily twice as effective as the M-4.

Well, I'd better explain it here.

That gun is not some cheap toy. It is cheap as far as money comes, but it is VERY powerfull. The M-4 has a life of about 14,000 rounds of ammunition. The M8 has a life of 20,000. And they fired the M-8 15,000 times without it jamming once.

The gun can also be dissasembled with no tools...oh, and btw, the only plastic part is the covering. The rest is all gun metal. The gun can also be turned into a 12 guage shotgun with no tools. IN THE FIELD.

It can also be converted into different versions with no tools. Like a sharpshooter varrient, shotgun, a close quarters varient and carbine. It is basicly the first 'battle rifle' to be successfull. It also can use the upcoming M320 40mm single shot grenade launcher.

It also, thanks to modern materials, weighs only six pounds. So you can easily have two of them in each hand. Plus the recoil is almost un-noticable. Making it even more accurate then it allready is.

Best damn gun to come out of the techies ass, if you ask me. As far as standard infantry weapons go.

umm, ya thats nice, but who uses this thing? indonesia? Oh and by the way the M-4 is an old weapon I have to admit that, its outdated in many ways. But the U.S. army is making a realy good gun right now that will surpass that, in 4 years tho.

And what is that? The OICW/GL? The M4 isn't an outdated weapon, its still an excellent gun as I have used a version of it called the C-8 service rifle. It is totally versitile and has nice range and I love the recoil on the rifle. With all of the firearms and sidearms I have fired (Which includes the C-7A1 [better known as the M16] service rifle, C6 heavy machine gun, and the C9 light machine gun) the C-8 or M4 is by far the best.

The M8 is going to replace the M4, and the M8 is part of the OICW/GL. But that weapon will only be used by heavy weapons squads due to its large size and weight. The M8 will be used for standard infantry and special forces units unless they use the G36C.

Yes, he means the OICW, which will be a kickass gun. Objective Indivual Combat Weapon. 6 round HE round launcher, can be programmed to explode after a distance. Rangefinder. 30 explosives, semiautomatic/fully automatic.

This is a contriversial subject. And it entirely depends on which branch of the military you are talking about. I am a proud member of the Canadian Army, and although I am not American, I have many many friends who are enlisted members of the United States Army. As I said, the M8 may be coming to the USMC, but from what I have heard and researched, the firearm to replace the standard issue M16-A2 assault rifle carried by the general light infantry enlisted or non-commissioned member is going to be the OICW/GL.

Everyone, if you want more information on the M8, go to Sniper Gods and read the Factoid 003 in the Poppy's Military Factoids Database.

I was unaware of the fact that the M8 project is also the OICW project. The M8 from my knowledge is an entirely different weapon from the OICW. And you act as though either of these weapons once done testing will be immediately replacing the M4 carbine or the M16-A2, which is wrong. Its going to take a long time and a large quantity of money to take all of the existing M16-A2s and M4 carbines out of circulation. And as I said, I believe that giving the OICW the standard issue rank has nothing to do with giving it to heavy infantry or armored divisions or regiments. As I said before, I believe it has largely to do with what branch you are talking about. I know some about the USMC, but I know alot more about the US Army. And the OICW is at this point in time set for replacing the standard issue M16-A2. I could even call up my friend who is with the 82nd Airbourne Div. and ask him.

What's the advantage of loading as a bullup vs a standard clip?

The M4 isnt the standard army assault rifle, the M16 is. The M4 is just a carbine (close quarters) variant of the M16, they both are used today.

The XM8 (will be called M8 after it is officially adopted) is a vast improvement over both the M16 and the M4. It uses the same 5.56 round, just has a better muzzle velocity and will be more user-friendly (like someone already said, it will jam far less often as one of the improvements). It is being made by Heckler & Koch America, the American cousin of Heckler and Koch, the german makers of many weapons such as the G3 assault rifle, and the UMP45 and MP5 submachine guns.

And yes, the resemblance is striking. I first thought the battle rifle was based on the french FAMAS assault rifle, untill i saw the XM8 and saw that they look exactly alike.

A bullpup design makes the weapon lighter, smaller and more powerfull since the round is under pressure longer then an unbullpup'd weapon. PLus some other crap

A bullpup is generally more compact, other than that and some increased muzzle velocity there isnt much of a difference.

I guess it's an American gunstyle to not use bullpup. The differences arn't too much so I guess they don't give it much thought into changing.

Its expensive. People act as though money grows on trees, and as much as I would love to think its the truth, but military funding is not always the priority.
