Subject: Why lock a thread?

Wouldn't it be better to just remove the thread? If people can't comment on a locked post whats the point of it even being their?

The tide is turning, brothers! Let us take our kingdom back!

It's like a public execution. Minus the violence and gore, of course.

If you lock it, you preserve the fact that it was deemed against the rules. It can serve as a warning to others. Not to mention that it serves to keep a record of events.

It'll slide out of view eventually anyway.

Right, but most if not all locked threads have nothing at all to come back too. Its just sort of a stain on the main page, that we all have to look at until it gets absorbed into the bowls of Bungie.net

Especially with threads that serve a purpose/have served a purpose.

The progression and use of a forum is shown by its number of threads, if threads were locked instead of deleted there would be a fragment of threads left in a specific forum, and it wouldn't appear very active.

I'm sure there are plenty of other reasons, but that's just a few things I could think of.

Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

0x0 x0x 0x0 000 000 x0x 000
x0x 0x0 0x0 0xx 000 0x0 000
x0x x0x x00 0xx 0x0 x0x 0x0

I have seen you future

While keeping it for evidence may be a reason, I bet it is a minor one. Threads are locked for a variety of reasons. A thread may have strayed off topic or run its course. If either of these is true the thread still has value, even if there is nothing more to be discussed in it.

If a thread is off topic then it is locked, but even though it is ugly, it may still hold some marginal value (perhaps the OP can still have their question answered, or be told where to go).

Check out my, Lobster Fish 2's and CTN 0452 9's post. Not to mention that a lot of locked threads have useful and relevant information in them.

Can you give me an example of a locked thread that have useful information? I get that it can serve as a warning to others thought. That does make sense.

I suspect llamas are secretly wizards. I <3 poptarts n' milk. I like me. Grimick is defined as: a logical parodox, the act of funnaling a potato down your throat, and a deliciously flavored muffin (with pecons and blueberries). Norway is the Swedish word for 'moron'. My sister has cancer, so i get to use handicap parking and cut small children in line at Disneyland.

"Don't eat doughnuts on thin ice."

"The pancake, my friend, has officially been flipped."

If a thread vanished from the forums you might want to send the mod a pm asking why. Locking saves their PM inbox.

Thanks. I sort of always wondered why they just don't get rid of locked threads. Now I have a better idea :)

"We live in a special time; the only time where we can observationally verify that we live in a very special time" - Lawrence Krauss.

I was a finalist :P

There are a few reasons I can think of. One would be some form of evidence, which would be provided to a user if their thread is locked, and the user is warned or banned. The link provided in the Disembodied soul message would not work, and cause possible confusion with the user involved.
