Yes, I feel that Master Chief will die for the greater cause. I assume there will be a situation at the end of the game where he will have to sacrifice himself, and he will give his last goodbyes to cortana (if she is not crazy). This goes all the way back to the book The Fall Of Reach, where his conversation with Chief Mendez talks about lives wasted and lives spent. I also feel that if the remaining Spartans are included in the game, they will be along side the Master Chief and will die together (quote from The Fall Of Reach:)- better to fight and die along side a friend than to leave him behind
Yes, this may be a little deep, but when the time comes I think this scenario will be very fitting, and it will make us all cry, rejoice, and remember all at the same time.
I tend to think it'll be the other way around. I think Cortana will be the one buying the farm at the end. Afterall you can't kill of the Chief and leave the Arbiter and Cortana. You kill the Chief you kill eveyrone.
On a side note. If the MC does die at the end of the game I will not only be pissed, but it'll ruin the game for me no matter how awesome it is. It'll be like "yeah greatest game ever" then in the final cutscene the MC dies, and it'll be like the biggest downer in gaming history. For that reason alone I don't think it'll happen. An ending where he dies even if in a heroic save eveyrone fashion will leave fans feeling down, and the last thing Bungie would want to do is end this chapter of the Halo series with big downer and have fans crying.
