This thread would have appealed to me more if it was written with crayons.

I broke one of the cords for my X11s because I couldn't get past the final American course in Doritos Crash Course.

I honestly havnt read anything about SOPA yet, its quite the hot topic in the flood and the rest of the interwebz just now but I've avoided it. Partly because Im not American and it doesn't affect me (yet) and partly because I dont want to read something that makes me shake my head the whole way through and then question how 'free' the 'free world' is.

To be honest it sounds bad, I think the US government are really starting to fear the internet (Personal internet ID's for users?!), and in typical United States fashion they've hyped it up and overreacted. I just hope for everyone's sake they take a deep breath, count to ten, and think about what they're doing.

Our government has a track record of overstepping their powers. Giving them control over the internet is a BAD idea. There is no over-hyping here. This is a legitimate concern. If this passes the government will literally control the internet. Yeah, some of us will still function just fine on the internet via use of IPs and other neat workarounds. But still. Congress is legitimately considering letting the US Government control one of the most vibrant and expressive uses of the first amendment.

And most importantly, these powers are included no where inside of their enumerated powers. From the very start it's unconstitutional and a threat to the American people, and to the world. If this passes in America you know it will pass elsewhere.

Don't eat soap.

I'm glad to see that Bungie is opposing SOPA. Let's hope that we can stop it.

But the First Amendment doesn't grant you the right to use unauthorized copyrighted material.

Would SOPA affect a lovely Canadian such as myself?

<3 canada. maybe, in a domino effect sort of way but other than that not realy

  • 01.13.2012 8:59 PM PDT

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Yup. American sites that you use will be affected.

More than that though, you know that Harper will jump on SOPA if he sees America doing it. The Americanization of Canada is number one on his to-do list, you can expect it to be implemented in Canada within a year if it passes in the States.

Can someone tell me what's wrong with these two, this made me LOL hard.

Bungie would be affected heavily due to people linking stuff from Youtube and other sites no?

There are already acts in place to help developers and other IP-holding companies in that regard. This bill does nothing that isn't already being done and adds a whole lot more control over the entire system.

First of all, it doesn't stop the problem, it doesn't even prevent it. You'll still be able to access foreign piracy sites without hindrance if you know the IP. This bill does nothing but inconvenience the average user and threaten the existence of social sites and media sharing hubs like YouTube or Tumblr. There's like a 900% (Yes, 900) that google will either be shutdown or fined into extinction. Imagine using the web without a search engine? Dogpile, yahoo search, ask.com, etc. They are all doomed if this bill gets passed. You can't archive the web and not also archive pirated material.

yeah, sorry, that's what I meant, the government got scared, overeacted, over hyped the problem, then tried to pass a bill to remedy their own ridiculous fears.

This is riDonkculous...I will be contacting my local senators to voice my opinion on this issue.

Um...that control...will help them stop copyright infringement (at the curbing of free speech, yes, but that's a problem with copyright law)

Your ISP will block these foreign sites. They won't cease to exist from the Internet, they'll just cease to exist without you somehow tricking your ISP

Again, there is copyright infringement on these sites. They are breaking laws right now.

So, yeah. That happened.

If you want to know how Bungie feels about SOPA, check out our official statement, delivered bravely by my fearless leader.

Feel free to discuss this issue. Let the debate rage in this thread, and ONLY in this thread. Be excellent to each other. The rules still apply. SOPA is more than a political issue. It's a phenomenon that would impact the industry in which we play, as well as the mediums we use to interact with you fine people.

Beyond this conversation, the laws that govern Bungie.net do not change. Political debate is not something that we want to see here. On this rarest of occasions, we are breaking our own rules. Such is the privilege of ruling the domain that you host.

The sites aren't black-holed as you're suggesting, they're removed from DNS servers in the USA. You can easily use alternate DNS or connect directly in some situations.

The sites aren't breaking laws, the users are. There's a big difference.

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

If passed, it will hurt for a while but I see it being ruled unconstitutional eventually.

The tide is turning, brothers! Let us take our kingdom back!

I gotta admit, I'm afraid that it'll pass. Hopefully others will follow in Bungie's footsteps.

My point was that in most cases, it won't be as easy as he's suggesting. Although this really isn't the point

I never said the sites were breaking laws. Rather, I didn't mean that they were. I was referring to the pages with copyright infringement that are breaking laws. And why shouldn't the government have the power to block pages that are breaking laws?
