The sites aren't black-holed as you're suggesting, they're removed from DNS servers in the USA. You can easily use alternate DNS or connect directly in some situations.

My point was that in most cases, it won't be as easy as he's suggesting. Although this really isn't the point.
It really is, there are already 2 Firefox addons that provide this functionality. The user could also change their DNS server in their network settings.

The sites aren't breaking laws, the users are. There's a big difference.

I never said the sites were breaking laws. And why shouldn't the government have the power to block pages that are breaking laws?
I'm not going to make this political.

I doubt the average computer user will know that. But again, this isn't really relevant.

So...how do you plan to argue against a potential law?

All you have to do is explain why the government can't reinforce a law. Unless you only wanted to talk about the technical part of it.

everything/anything can be compared to sand on a beach

SOPA is just a bill to make the money whores, just bigger money whores.

  • 01.13.2012 9:41 PM PDT

ISU Cyclones!

Well done Bungie, well done. The only way this law passes is not if enough people support it, but if enough people stay silent.

Quite frankly there really needs to be something done that's a step in SOPA's direction when it comes to piracy... but this is just 100% corporations trying to weasel in an unfair law that would only benefit them and not the people. Via large amounts of pledged campaign "donations" most likely.

They'll need to buy out a lot of people though because all signs point to needing the 2/3rds majority since Obama said he'd veto it before. I hope he sticks to that if things go that far.

-edit for too much political rambling-

I've completed a university course related to this ("Power and Freedom in the new millennium"), but I've been warned one to many times here for political discussion, which going into an in depth explanation of this would require.

Secondly, my strength here is on the technical end, as I'm a Computer Science & Network Engineering student.

To quote mr universe form firefly " You can't stop the signal "

No where in the bill is it illegal for a person of the united states to circumvent the DNS blocking if there not downloading pirated material.

I already have a doomsday plan in place incase this thing passes.

A series of cleverly coded addons and a few changes to native proxy settings will do just fine.

It is impossible to do something like this effectivly on a nation wide scale not to mention the fact that the bill is unconstitutional and will get nailed to the cross by the supreame court.

( Personally i don't see a constitutional debate as political, i see it as a freedom debate. But for fear of "render unto ceaser " i won't make any more comments about the bill's infringment on the constitution )

Feel free to discuss this issue. Let the debate rage in this thread, and ONLY in this thread. Be excellent to each other.

I figure this gives us grounds enough to discuss the political implications of SOPA. As long as we're civil I hope we're not breaking any rules.

This legislation could cause repercussions across so many current mediums of speech and assembly on the internet that it could be easily be seen as an affront to them.

The bills purpose is to stifle competitors as much as it is to stop piracy.

Take a look at the mega upload song. When mega upload was taken down by universal music group for a day they put togeather a song with various artist in suport of mega upload.

Then UMG got youtube to take down a song with no copywites to it because they didn't want people knowing or getting all actavist about wut had happened, seeing as how UMG lost and mega upload is back up and working fine.

Time and time again companies have taken down videos that arn't actually held by them because they don't like them and they have the weight to through around... now they have enough weight to kill a whole site

You're acting like SOPA gives companies the right to shut down things they don't like. No, they have to file a legitimate claim against a part of a website that is infringing copyright. Then the government takes that claim, decides if it's valid, and censors that part of the website.

Free speech does not allow for piracy because of copyright laws. If you don't like SOPA, take it up with copyright laws.

I have no issues with copywrite law.

I have issues when the legislation sets a giant coperate bolder at the top of the slipperiest slope ever created, gives it a push, and then expects a graceful slow decent

i'm pretttty sure it is, it holds the entire site responsible instead of an individual user.

I have no issues with copywrite law.

Then why is it an issue when a corporation tries to enforce copyright law?

This can't be abused. Copyrighted material will be removed, and nothing more.

  • 01.13.2012 10:17 PM PDT

I'm glad Bungie is taking an official side on this. And, gladly, I agree with them.

No, it only gives corporations the right to remove copyrighted material.

Everything will be gone long before me. When the first living thing was born, I was here, waiting. When the last living thing dies, my job is finished. I'll put the chairs on the tables, turn out the lights and lock the universe behind me when I leave.

Yay Bungie! +1 respect point. Is Bungie considering joining the other sites on the blackout on the 18th?

"We live in a special time; the only time where we can observationally verify that we live in a very special time" - Lawrence Krauss.

I was a finalist :P

This is a good move in my opinion. From what I've read on SOPA, it seems that if it does pass, it will attack communities and websites which shouldn't be attacked - in order to attempt to stop certain illegal activities happening on-line.

First off nice selective quoting.

Second. Sopa is 5 mega ton bomb, aimed at a small shack. You honestly think there won't be any collateral damage. If you can sit on the other side of your screen thinking that Sopa is honestly the best way to combat piracy Then we have nothing more to discuss.

I'd like to interject for a moment. The ability to remove copyrighted materials already exists under the DMCA. Also, when it comes to DNS based blocking, it's all or nothing. There's no "just this page" it's the entire domain.

You should take a read here.
