(To discuss Halo 4.)

This thread is not about the quality of both games, or about other games, or the reason why it is such.

/Inflation not taken into account since Halo "reached" its height with Halo 3's sales, similar to how MW3 has not grown much compared to MW2 if you take the percentage of people playing...

Well, here it is. The definitive thread that cancels out a forum rumor about this franchise, a rumor often used to subvert other members into proposals over the future.

Let's begin with sales.

Halo Reach broke the opening record in the franchise, selling 3.3 million copies on the first day, $200 million revenue. That was probably around 1/4 of Halo 3's total, Halo 3 has sold to date 14.5 million. I simple Google search will find many hits with these numbers.

Reference, Wikipedia articles for Reach, 3 and Halo as a whole. If you don't believe the article, look up the references. 14.5 million copies for 3 was sourced from this site.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halo:_Reach
Halo Reach is on track to beat Halo 3, at at least come close to that 15 million margin. Microsoft has doubled Halo's revenue in the last 17 months.
This is not the point.

Now, lets go to population.

People have been comparing Reach's population to Halo 3. One common thing I have noticed is that: Reach is only on 100,000 right now, Halo 3 had 300,000.

There are 3 things wrong with this:

1. Comparing different time frames from release
2. Different Sets of Data
3. Inaccurate Halo 3 number, improved in Reach due to features such as active roster, and the release of Stat API files. Reach's population does not include certain states of people, either.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Another common complaint:
4. Halo Reach is low on the population charts.
==============================================
1. Is a common user error.
2.

Posted by Urk:
The numbers you're using are not comparable. Halo 3 is displaying its total player count over the last 24 hours. Halo: Reach is displaying how many players are online right now.

Halo: Reach has way more active players and the attrition rate is much, much lower than it was for Halo 3.

So, in summary: Reach is currently way more popular than Halo 3 is and remains more popular than Halo 3 was this many days after its release date.

Yay, science!

:D

3.

Except that the number of players listed in a playlist only counts the people who are actively in a game, not people between games, or in other non-playlist modes. The delta between those two easily accounts for the difference.

I swear, you guys are obsessed with population counts. Reach is in a pretty steady state regarding player population, and nobody is padding the numbers. Indeed, Reach has a much more accurate population counter (thanks to the Active Roster) than Halo 3 does (which counts based on games processed, not in real time).
SECOND POST
Because the "real time counter" varies so much depending on when in the day you look at it, it made more sense to post the 24 hour value to give a more useful reading. The real-time counter doesn't really matter except when you're look at a particular playlist (since it is helpful to gauge how fast matchmaking in that playlist will be).

You may feel differently about the importance of the counter, of course, but that was the design reason for the change.

why did you switch to the 24 hours, instead of online right now?

4. Reach is low on the population charts.
In 2011 Reach was 4th, behind 3 COD games. Not bad.

=====================================================
Ok, I have now shown you the facts behind the actual recording system. Lets get down to the real numbers...
http://metahalo.com/population/
Reach population, October 29th 2010, 1 1/2 months after release.
Approximately 1.15 million 24 hour clock.

Halo 3 population:
http://www.bungie.net/Fo...tRepeater1-p=1#13301381
I believe it says a much lower count.

TLDR
Reach's population was/is higher than 3's.
Stop this nonsense about low population.

I will update this when I can.

I would have used waybackmachine, but it is not working.

Immortality: A toy which people cry for, And on their knees apply for, Dispute, contend and lie for, And if allowed Would be right proud Eternally to die for.

That's better. :)

Wat.

COD is dominating. Halo 4 won't change that, Halo 3 at it's height would have still lost to COD.

It is sad.

Do you really want to get into an argument about that?

Reach was more popular than Halo 3 ever was.

Reach is losing to COD.
3 is losing to recent CODs, and even COD4.

  • 01.13.2012 3:19 PM PDT

wow halo reach is STILL BAD!!!

theres no way halo 2 or halo 3 would be losing to all 3 cod games. maybe 1 but certainly not all 3. thats pathetic.

There is.

COD is extremely popular. Halo Reach population wise is the most popular Halo, and it is losing to 3 COD games.

Halo 2 was the most popular Xbox game until GOW came out...

What house has a rocket pod, has legs, and has a long narrow barrel that probably shoots something powerful?

Sounds like you're describing the lower half of my body, actually.

Don't try to tell the retards at waypoint this. I remember telling them that there was less than a 2% difference in movement speed between Halo 3 and Reach. When they didn't believe me I showed them a video proving it and they still refused to accept it.

  • 01.13.2012 3:55 PM PDT

When you think that you have it all is the moment that you can lose it. Don't think ahead if you can't think for the present.

Unfortunately there is not very much in terms of appreciation between the games, but many have their preferences, which can impact the population of games. I honestly don't prefer Reach over H3, but I do think some aspects of it are decent. Hopefully 343 can find a way to bring back that classic feel when they make H4, but still have a few innovations in it. Maybe then will the ratings and population surpass the combined efforts of 3 and Reach.

I know. They want a Halo 3.5 at all costs. They don't even care if the community wants something else.

Somethings I have seen:
No assassinations
No Infection
No Griffball
No FORGE:>!#@ Apparently it is better to concentrate on
"Halo's roots" instead of the above.

Obviously trolls, and I'm pretty sure 343 realizes this.

Also, I don't want a Halo 3.5. I want Halo 4 to be just like Halo 3 was to Halo 2. A want a continuation of that. Almost as if Reach never existed.

(I like Reach btw)

Only if "more popular" means "more people brought it".
Sad part was that reach - even after setting a new record first day sales figure - could NOT hold the #1 MM played game position for more than 2 WEEKS after launch.

And how does H3 now sell for the same price as reach in most stores ... hello many store no longer even take reach as a trade-and-save title because they already hold too much stock .... how does that even equate to "more popular"?!?

  • 01.13.2012 5:03 PM PDT

Who cares about the population of any of the two games?! As long, as the are good maps, good gametypes, and good players who consistently play the games, then nothing else matter. That is not saying the quality of Reach is any better than 3 (because it's not) nor that Reach is a true, great Halo game ( because it isn't, but the updates are improving it...little,by little" Nub. Haha.

  • 01.13.2012 5:24 PM PDT

Your first quote box by Urk is outdated though mate. At the time, Halo: Reach did use a live counter. But now it has switched to the 24 hour counter just like Halo 3.

Unless you mean in-game counter. I'm talking about the website one myself.

  • 01.13.2012 5:43 PM PDT

COD is a lot more newbie friendly , with all that stupid crap like ridiculously overpowered guns and perks, plus the other tools that allow for cheap tactics, so it's a very appealing game to a large demographic. Between the lack of skill required to play the game at a basic level compared to Halo, and it's military setting, it's obvious that it's gonna attract more people, but that means nothing, it's still an overrated franchise. It might have more players, but Halo has a very strong community, there's nothing to fear.

Reach current has more players than H3.

H3 had more players at it's activity peak then Reach did it's own.
